There's no denying that 2022 was yet another year in which technology grew increasingly influential across every industry, and the Search Engine industry was no exception, with competition heating up once again. As a result, even though Google is the market leader in Search Engines, it still needs to continuously improve and roll out new features for its users and marketers.

Most recently, Google announced the launch of a new technology on the Chrome Browser called Interactive Screenshots, designed to deliver an even better experience on web pages. The company calls this feature “Freeze Dried Tabs.” What exactly does it involve, and what do marketers need to know? If you don't want to see your competitors get ahead of you in the online world, let's find out together.

What Is the Freeze Dried Tabs Feature?

Google defines this new style of web page on Chrome as something like a hybrid between a Screenshot and an Interactive Webpage, called Freeze Dried Tabs.

This Freeze Dried browser page is a new technology on Chrome built on the idea of solving the problem of improving the user experience when switching between tabs or when starting up a new browser page, by using this new style of browser tab to render the display (though not on every web page at the moment).

Calder Kitagawa, who holds the position of Chrome Software Engineer, explained the technical details of the Freeze Dried Tabs feature in a Blog Post: “As is well known, rendering content on a web page requires a great deal of processing power, because it needs to load various Resources on the site, whether that's Javascript, CSS, and others. This sometimes makes it slower or laggier compared to opening a Native app, especially on Mobile Devices, which can often only load a few web pages at a time due to various limitations. This led the Google development team to ask whether there was a way to make rendering web pages consume fewer resources while still keeping the display as smooth and as close in detail to the original web page as possible. The development team therefore arrived at the idea of improving the web page during transitional moments (the Transitional UI), such as switching tabs or starting up a new browser page.”

The development team's question led to this answer, with Google revealing test results showing that this new style of web page improves web page load speed by up to 20%, allowing an entire web page to be displayed in an average of just 2.8 seconds while still maintaining excellent display quality.

Freeze Dried Tabs Is Now Available on Chrome

The Freeze Dried Tabs technology can already be used on the Chrome Browser. Although the technology currently only helps support the Server on Cold Start, the development team has noted that other parts will follow in the future.

Final Thoughts

This is good news for both Google Chrome users and brands or marketers who are just starting to do online marketing on Search Engines, because a web page with better Page Speed naturally means a better browsing experience for users, which in turn benefits SEO very well over the long term.
