Google Allows Users to Limit Ad Access on YouTube and GDN

Previously in 2020, Google announced that users could limit access to advertisements related to alcohol and gambling. In 2022, Google plans to add some additional ad types that users can choose to block or allow on the YouTube and Google Display Ads platforms. What will the details be? What should marketers and brands know? Relevant Audience will guide you through the answers in this article.

Limit Ad Access on YouTube and Google Display Ads

As you may already know, Google previously announced that users could limit access to advertisements for alcohol and gambling on YouTube only. However, Google has now updated this for users on both YouTube and Google Display Ads, including advertisements related to:

However, limiting ad access does not mean that users will never see these advertisements. They will simply be shown “less.” And because the content categories of these advertisements are quite sensitive, there may be some additional restrictions depending on the laws of each country.

How to Enable

For users who want to reduce the visibility of these types of advertisements, they can easily do so by:

  1. Log in to your Google Account
  2. Select Data & Privacy on the left side of the menu bar
  1. Scroll down and click on Ad Setting
  1. Then, users will see the ad categories they can choose to reduce visibility. Simply click “See Fewer” to complete the process.

According to an interview with Karin Hennessy, Group Product Manager for Ads Privacy at Google, “Users have a growing desire to control their advertising experience, which includes the ability to block ads they don’t want to see. Creating a good experience and giving users a sense of control over their safety is what Google wants. We will continue to listen to user feedback to see what content or advertising categories we might expand this feature to cover in the future.”

This announcement suggests that Google may allow users to choose to limit access to additional types of ad content in the future. Creating a safe experience for Google users is a positive thing. For brands or marketers, this update from Google may not significantly affect them. One advantage is that it may improve targeted advertising performance as you can limit access for user groups unlikely to be interested in the advertising campaign.
