Following Google’s launch of the Website Name or Site Name feature in May, aimed at improving search result display efficiency, this feature initially supported mobile devices only and was limited to English, German, French, and Japanese websites. This resulted in several limitations, preventing full functionality.

Therefore, on July 28, 2023, Google Search Console released an update regarding the Website Name (Site Name) feature to enhance its effectiveness. It will now support usage on all devices, but remains limited to English, German, French, and Japanese websites. Additionally, there have been updates to the system’s name website functionality, allowing Google to select websites to display in search results more effectively.

What is Site Name

What is Site Name?

Site Name refers to the name of a webpage displayed on Google Search results. The Site Name is a name used for the entire website, unlike the Link Title, which is a name specific to each webpage. In this feature, Google identifies the website name from various sources, and we can specify the desired name by adding the Structured Data Website section to our website.

Tips for Choosing a Website Name

As we know, identifying or defining a website name or Site Name can be done by adding Structured Data Website to display the desired website name.

And recently, after Google released additional updates, it will support and accommodate the use of the alternateName property more. In cases where you cannot choose the desired website name or the website name is unavailable, as Google’s system typically does not support using the same website name repeatedly, using the alternateName property to specify another name as an option will help Google consider displaying the backup website name instead.

How to Fix When the System Does Not Display the Website Name as Defined

Even after specifying a Site Name or desired website name and defining a backup name, in some cases where the names are repeated, not concise, or not well-known, the system may not display either name.

Typically, the system uses the domain name or subdomain name as the website name. However, if the system still does not display the website name, to resolve the issue, we recommend checking the website name and backup name specified in the Structured Data WebSite section to ensure they are completely and accurately specified.

Summary about Website Name (Site Name)

Google is continuously developing and improving features such as the website name or Site Name to make them better and more efficient, helping the system display search results that are useful and meet user needs as much as possible.

However, the Site Name feature still has several limitations in usage, and in some cases, you may encounter problems where the website name on the homepage differs from other pages on the website. Therefore, the Site Name feature still needs to be improved and updated in the future.
