Google Launches a New Dashboard on Business Profile That Marketers Can't Miss

We believe many new business owners are already quite familiar with Google Business Profile (the benefits of updating your Business Profile), especially those whose businesses fall into the local business category and are just getting started with online marketing, such as doing Local SEO to help boost sales, where keeping the business profile on Google Business Profile up to date is absolutely essential.

Previously, anyone who wanted to activate and edit various pieces of information had to log in to the dashboard on Google Business Profile, or for small tweaks they could make edits through the SERPs (edit Business Profile information via Google Search). But most recently, Google has decided to discontinue the method of editing by logging in to the dashboard, and has instead launched a new dashboard called the New Merchant Experience (NMX). What are all the details? Relevant Audience has gathered the information so we can find out together.

What is Google NMX?

NMX, or Google New Merchant Experience, is a revamped dashboard for editing business profile information on Business Profile in a new format, in which Google will require all users to access and edit all of their information through the Google Search page.

What's new in Google NMX?

It's a new experience that Google is giving to users, and it's hard to say whether it's excellent or terrible. That's because this Google update results in the loss of several important features in the original editing dashboard. The main changes are as follows:

  • The "How customers search for your business" metric is no longer available.
  • Location Information is also no longer available.
  • If a user has multiple business profiles, they can still access all of their profiles through the NMX dashboard as before.

The advantages of Google NMX

Reading this far, many of you are probably starting to ask what advantages Google NMX, the new Google Business Profile dashboard, actually has, since so far it sounds like it has only discontinued various features. Even a BrightLocal poll on Twitter showed that more than 83% of users agreed that NMX adds complications to usability for ordinary people.

That said, there may be some advantages that can help enhance the new experience, just as Google claims (there has to be something good about it, otherwise Google wouldn't have set up the New Merchant Experience). Because if we take a look at the layout and the various features that the new dashboard provides, we find that the common basic features are still fully usable. On top of that, Google's move to streamline the editing process—from having to waste time logging in to the old dashboard to instead editing through the Google Search page—seems well suited to local businesses that don't want anything overly complicated. Mainly, the original menu-based layout has largely been changed into icons, which helps users see things more clearly and encourages them to spend more time on NMX, which may well be Google's true goal with this update.

In closing

Even though it may look like it adds a little extra hassle to updating and editing information for Business Profile, its importance remains the same. If you are running a local business and want to boost your Local SEO score, using a free tool like Google Business Profile is a fundamental thing that should be one of the first things you do.
