Good news for website builders and business owners! Google has announced the addition of 8 languages to the automatic translation feature of Google Chrome, which will help various websites reach more users.

In this article, Relevant Audience will show you what the 8 new languages that Google has added are and how they benefit website developers or businesses.

The Challenges of Multilingual SEO

Originally, creating a two-language or multilingual website was one challenge. The method was quite complex compared to creating a single-language website. It required installing backend code or language translation plugins, resulting in additional budget for website creation.

How Does Google’s Translation Feature Work?

For Google’s translation feature, the system translates languages for users from the search results page, even if the main language of the website does not match the language the user is searching for. The system automatically translates both the main title (Meta Title) and sub-title (Meta Description). When users click into the website, the system automatically translates the language on the website. The 8 new languages that Google has added include:

1. Arabic

2. Gujarati

3. Korean

4. Persian

5. Turkish

6. Thai

7. Urdu

8. Vietnamese

Increased Competition

Although Google is one of the major players in the online search engine market, language limitations have resulted in Google Chrome being less popular in some countries, such as South Korea, where most South Koreans prefer to use Naver for internet searches because the search engine supports Korean.

By updating new languages added to the automatic translation feature, it will help enhance Google’s ability to compete with competitors, which may increase Google Chrome users.

Challenges of Automatic Translation Features

However, Google’s automatic translation feature still has some limitations, such as translating text not fluently, using inappropriate vocabulary, and others. Especially for specialized content that is quite complex, resulting in the feature not being able to completely replace human content translation on websites.

In addition, there are also reports that websites using Google’s automatic translation feature have longer webpage loading times (Page Speed) than websites with multiple languages built-in. Factors such as content translation quality and webpage loading speed affect website ranking in search results.

Traditional multilingual website development, which requires installing code or plugins, involves relatively high costs. Therefore, automatic translation features are suitable for small business websites that do not yet have significant investment in website creation, websites that need to translate content urgently, or websites that want to test the market before investing in full language content translation.
