Meta Description

A meta description is the short summary shown under the title in search results, ideally around 150 to 160 characters so it does not get truncated.

It is not a ranking factor, but a sharp, benefit-led description lifts click-through rate, and Google often rewrites it to match the user's query. Write it as ad copy rather than a keyword dump. Note the limit is in characters, not words.

Google generates its own snippet for a large share of results, and the generated version often outperforms the written one because it matches the specific query. That makes descriptions worth writing selectively, not everywhere. Prioritise pages where the search result is the sales pitch: service pages, product pages, and anything you run ads against. For a blog archive of several hundred posts, leaving them unwritten costs almost nothing. Where you do write one, look at the queries the page already earns impressions for in Search Console and write to those, not to the keyword you hoped it would rank for.
