Anyone with experience in doing SEO knows well that Link Building, and Backlinks in particular, are quite beneficial for a website. Backlink If you want to increase the number of visitors to your website without spending much budget on advertising investment on Google Ads, having good Backlinks can meet that need. However, sometimes the links pointing back to our website, if they are bad or low-quality links, can also do harm instead of good.

In this article, we will take everyone through an in-depth, comprehensive, step-by-step process for checking Backlinks, along with how to perform Disavow Links to remove low-quality Backlinks from your website. Anyone just getting started with SEO should not miss this. If you are ready, let's take a look.

What does a bad Backlink look like?

Before we filter out the bad Backlinks from our website, we need to start by checking which are the good Backlinks worth keeping, and which are the low-scoring Backlinks that should be removed from the website as quickly as possible.

The characteristics of a bad Backlink are as follows:

To inspect or check a website's Backlinks, you can use Google Search Console, or you can use websites dedicated specifically to checking Backlinks as well, such as sitechecker.pro, fankwatch.com, freetools.seobility.net, and ahrefs.com, among others.

Here, we will teach you how to perform Disavow Links, which is the act of rejecting low-quality links that drag down our website's ranking without us realizing it. The steps for performing Disavow Links on your website are as follows:

1. Start by checking your website's Backlinks first

As mentioned, checking Backlinks can be done using a website dedicated specifically to checking Backlinks or using Google Search Console as well. Here, we will use Google Search Console as an example, starting with:

  1. Open and use Google Search Console
  2. Click on Property >> Links >> External Links
  3. Click on Top Linking Sites

After that, the system will display the various Backlinks on the website.

2. Check for bad Backlinks

Then it is time to check the Backlinks that appear to be causing problems for the website, using the criteria for inspection from above. For example, look at which domains or URLs seem strange, and you can immediately list those items out.

3. Create a .txt file to prepare for uploading to Search Console

For the URL links you are preparing to Disavow on Search Console, the following conditions must be met:

  • Specify the URL to Disavow, one per line. You cannot choose to reject various Subpaths, such as example.com/en/
  • Always place "domain:" in front of the link you want to Disavow, for example domain:example.com
  • The .txt file must be able to be encoded with UTF-8 or 7-bit ASCII
  • The file name must end with .txt
  • The maximum URL length is 2,048 characters
  • The maximum file size is 2MB and is limited to only 100,000 lines (including blank lines and comment lines)
  • You can add comments, simply start a new line with the # symbol

4. Upload the file to Google Search Console

After creating the .txt file, you can upload the file to Search Console as follows:

  1. Go to the Disavow Links page
  2. Click to select the Property
  1. Click the Upload Your List button
  2. Select the Disavow file you created earlier
  • If the file has errors, the system will display the list of errors immediately. The way to fix the problem is that you must correct the items again and try clicking upload once more
  • If the upload is completed successfully, the system may take 2-3 weeks to incorporate the list and process the website pages

Finally, do not forget to check your Backlinks regularly, if possible at least every 3 months, to make sure that the Backlinks on your website do not contain spam links that are silent threats lurking on the website, which directly cause the website's ranking to drop. But the important thing is that you must do it carefully and always check for certain first that the Backlinks being removed really are of no quality. Otherwise, the result could turn completely upside down.
