TL;DR
- Promote in YouTube Studio is powered by Google Ads, but its campaigns can only be managed on YouTube and do not appear in the Google Ads interface.
- Goals are subscribers, views or website visits, with targeting by language, country, age, gender and interests.
- A promotable video must be public or unlisted, at least 10 seconds long and compliant with Google's advertising policies.
- YouTube's Help pages do not publish a minimum budget or a country list; billing runs through one linked Google Ads account with billing already set up.
- Subscribers and watch hours from promotions do not count toward YPP, except Follow-on Views from Audience growth promotions.
There are two ways to pay to promote YouTube videos. The first is the "Promote" button in YouTube Studio, which sets up a campaign in a few steps and runs on Google Ads but can only be managed inside YouTube. The second is building a video campaign in Google Ads yourself, which gives far more control. The first suits creators and businesses that want more views or subscribers quickly. The second fits when you need to measure sales or leads, or control where the ads appear.
This guide explains how Promotions in YouTube Studio work, which goals you can pick, how billing works, which videos cannot be promoted, and when to move to a full Google Ads campaign. The mechanics here come from YouTube's Help Center pages. Where those pages do not say something, this guide says so plainly.
What is YouTube Studio Promotions?
Promote is a simplified advertising tool inside YouTube Studio. YouTube's Help Center describes it as powered by Google Ads, but campaigns created there can only be managed on YouTube and cannot be opened or edited from the Google Ads interface. Put simply, the money and the auction belong to Google Ads, while the controls sit in YouTube Studio.
There are several entry points. On a computer, open YouTube Studio, choose "Content" and open the "Promotions" tab. There is also a Promote option in a video's three-dot menu and a Promote button on the watch page of your own videos. On mobile, the Help Center says promotions can be created on Android devices from the three-dot menu of a video or Short.
How it differs from running ads in Google Ads
Both use the same ad system underneath. The difference is control. In Promote you choose a goal, a video, broad targeting, a budget and an end date, and the system handles the rest. In Google Ads you choose a bid strategy, set up conversion tracking, use audiences built from your own data, exclude content or placements you do not want, and run several ads to compare them. One more point: Promote campaigns do not appear in the Google Ads account for management. If your marketing team runs everything in Google Ads, Studio campaigns will live in a separate place.
Which goals can you choose with the Promote button?
YouTube's Help Center says Promote is used to gain subscribers, views or website clicks. Each goal changes what the system looks for.
- The subscriber goal (Audience growth) shows the video to people likely to subscribe to the channel. It is also the only goal that counts Follow-on Views: organic views that happen when someone goes on to watch videos on the channel after seeing the promoted one.
- The views goal shows the video to people likely to be interested in watching it.
- The website visits goal looks for people likely to click the website link added to the promotion.
After choosing a goal, you can target by language, country, age, gender and interests. The system selects a channel video by default, which you can change, and fills in a headline and description automatically, which you can edit. If the video is in Thai, always check the auto-filled headline, because generated text may not match the channel's tone.
Creating a promotion step by step
- In YouTube Studio, choose "Content", open the "Promotions" tab and click "New promotion" (the first time, the button reads "Get started").
- Select a Google Ads account. The first time, you can link an existing account or create a new one. Only accounts with billing fully set up are shown.
- Choose a goal.
- Choose the video and check the headline and description.
- Set targeting, such as Thailand, Thai language, age range and interests.
- Set a budget and end date. With a new Google Ads account, billing has to be set up at this step.
- Click "Promote" to start the campaign.
Once a campaign is running, you can edit its details from the ongoing campaign, pause it from the status menu, set the end date to today to stop it, or click "Promote again" on a past promotion to start a new one with the same settings.
How do you pay to promote a YouTube video, and what is the minimum?
Payment goes through the linked Google Ads account. The Help Center says only accounts with completed billing setup can be selected, and the Promotions tab can link one Google Ads account at a time. To switch accounts, you can unlink after all promotions have ended or been paused. Each Google Ads account has a currency set when the account is created, so set it to match the payment method the business uses from the start.
On minimum budgets, YouTube's Help pages do not state a minimum, do not say whether the budget is daily or total, and do not list the countries where Promote is available. So this guide does not guess a number. The most reliable way to find out is to open the budget step in YouTube Studio with your own account and see the minimum the system shows, which may vary by account and currency. What the Help Center does confirm is that spend will not exceed the budget you set, and you can see the amount spent in the promotion's report.
Numbers reported in the Promotions tab
- Cost: the amount spent so far, which will not exceed the budget.
- Impressions: the number of times the campaign thumbnail was shown.
- Views: counted when someone watches for a set length of time.
- Subscribers: subscriptions within 3 days after watching 10 seconds or clicking the promotion.
- Website visits: clicks on the website link in the promotion.
Can you really promote a channel to gain subscribers?
Yes. Subscribers from Promote are real people who saw the video as an ad and chose to subscribe. YouTube's Help Center states that all views and subscribers gained through Promote are legitimate, which sets it apart from outside view-boosting services that break YouTube's policies.
There is an important limit for creators. Watch hours and subscribers gained through ad campaigns do not count toward the YouTube Partner Program (YPP) eligibility thresholds. Only organic subscribers count. The exception is Follow-on Views, which do count toward YPP eligibility, but only in Audience growth promotions. If your aim is to reach YPP faster, buying subscribers through Promote is not a shortcut.
The Help Center also says promotion results do not affect organic recommendations, either positively or negatively. Retention and click-through rate in YouTube Analytics may differ from organic traffic, because people arriving from ads are a different group from people who found the video on their own. When reading Analytics after a promotion, look at the numbers by traffic source.
The question to ask before promoting a channel is whether new subscribers will watch the next video. If the channel has few videos or uploads irregularly, new subscribers may have nothing to watch next. Promotion pays off better when the channel has enough related videos for people to keep watching.
Which videos cannot be promoted?
YouTube's Help Center lists three main requirements for a promotable video: it must be public or unlisted, at least 10 seconds long, and compliant with Google's advertising policies, including the editorial requirements and the requirements for YouTube video ads. Private videos and videos shorter than 10 seconds therefore cannot be promoted.
Other common questions are not covered directly on the Promote Help pages, so it helps to separate what is confirmed from what is not.
- Copyrighted music: the Promote Help pages have no music-specific rule, but videos must pass Google's advertising policies, which include a copyright section. If a video uses music without commercial rights, there is a risk the ad will not be approved.
- Made for kids content: the Promote Help pages do not say clearly whether it can be promoted. What YouTube states elsewhere is that content set as made for kids has several features and data collection restricted. If your channel is a kids' channel, try selecting the video in the Promotions flow and see whether the system accepts it.
- Age-restricted content or content limited by ad policy, such as gambling, alcohol or some financial products: it has to meet the rules for that category in Google's advertising policies, like any other ad.
Promote in YouTube Studio compared with a Google Ads video campaign
This table sums up the differences that affect the decision.
| Topic | Promote in YouTube Studio | Video campaign in Google Ads |
|---|---|---|
| Where it is managed | Only in YouTube Studio, not accessible through Google Ads | In the Google Ads account alongside other campaigns |
| Goals | Subscribers, views or website visits | More detailed options, including conversions you define |
| Targeting | Language, country, age, gender, interests | Adds your own data audiences, remarketing and content exclusions |
| Billing | Through one linked Google Ads account at a time | Directly through the Google Ads account |
When should you move to a full Google Ads video campaign?
Promote suits work where the goal ends on YouTube, such as getting more people to see a channel launch video or speeding up early subscriber growth. If any of the points below apply, move to Google Ads.
- You need to measure sales, leads or calls rather than views, which requires conversion tracking in a Google Ads account.
- You want to reach people who visited your site or watched your videos before, or use your own customer lists.
- You want to exclude content or channels where the brand should not appear.
- You want to test several ad versions at the same time to see which performs better.
- Your team already runs Search or Performance Max campaigns and wants video spend in the same reports.
A sensible way to move is to use Promote first to test which video pulls viewers in, then set that video up as an ad in Google Ads with conversion tracking. The Google Ads account linked to the Promotions tab can be the same account you use for full campaigns, but Promote campaigns can still only be managed from Studio. Clear naming and a written budget log help keep the two from overlapping.
What this means for advertisers in Thailand
For Thai channels and businesses, three extra points apply. First, language targeting: if the video is spoken in Thai, choosing Thai reduces impressions to people who cannot follow it. Second, since the Help pages do not list countries or minimum budgets, test the setup in a real account before planning a budget. Third, businesses that need real customers, such as clinics, real estate or online shops, usually need to measure leads or sales, which is a Google Ads job more than a Promote one.
During shopping and holiday peaks such as 11.11, 12.12 or Songkran, more advertisers compete, so the cost per view or per subscriber may be higher than usual. If you promote a video in those weeks, compare results with earlier periods carefully and read the numbers by traffic source in YouTube Analytics.
Questions about promoting on YouTube
Do you need a Google Ads account to promote on YouTube?
Yes, because Promote runs on Google Ads and bills through the linked Google Ads account. The first time, you can link an existing account or create a new one from the Promotions tab, and billing has to be set up first.
What is the minimum budget to promote a YouTube video?
YouTube's Help pages do not state a minimum budget as a number. The most reliable way to find it is to open the budget step in YouTube Studio with your own account and see the minimum the system shows for your account currency.
Do subscribers from Promote count toward YPP?
No, watch hours and subscribers gained through ad campaigns do not count toward YPP thresholds. The exception is Follow-on Views, which do count and are only available in Audience growth promotions.
Can you promote YouTube Shorts?
Yes, YouTube's Help Center says Promote works for both videos and Shorts, as long as the video is public or unlisted, at least 10 seconds long and compliant with Google's advertising policies.
Will promoting a video push it into organic recommendations?
No, YouTube's Help Center says promotion results do not affect organic recommendations, so paid views do not directly lift a video in recommendations.
Getting help with video campaigns
If you have used Promote and now want to measure sales or leads, see the YouTube ads service, or the Google Ads service if you want the same video to run alongside Search and other campaigns in one account. To reach viewers on video networks beyond YouTube, see the Thai video ads network page.
