TL;DR

  • TikTok's help page says Promote users must be at least 18, and promoting a LIVE needs an account with at least 1,000 followers.
  • Promote goals fall into four groups: boost account, get leads, get sales and boost LIVE. Lead campaigns only target users aged 18 or over.
  • Under the Promote terms, payment is due when you submit the order, a confirmed order cannot be cancelled, and promoted videos carry an advertising label.
  • Once Promote is linked to TikTok Ads Manager, the Promote balance can no longer be withdrawn and refunds follow the Ads Manager process.

To promote on TikTok ("โปรโมท tiktok" in Thai searches) means paying TikTok to push a video you have already posted to more people who do not follow you yet, using a tool called Promote that lives in the TikTok app and on the web, with no separate ad account required. If the goal is more views, followers or profile visits from a video that is already doing well, Promote is the fastest and simplest option. If you need to measure sales on your website, test several creatives at once or control targeting in detail, TikTok Ads Manager is the tool built for that job.

This guide covers promoting regular videos (not LIVE): what Promote is, how payment works, which goal to choose, whether viewers can tell it is an ad, and the signals that it is time to move to Ads Manager. All the mechanics come from TikTok's own help pages and Promote terms. Menus and options can change by app version and country, so check the actual screens in your own account before you decide.

What TikTok Promote is and how it differs from TikTok Ads Manager

TikTok describes Promote as an in-app advertising tool for amplifying videos and LIVEs. Its main advantage is that you use a video already on your profile, choose a goal, audience, budget and duration, and pay on a single screen. The promoted video then appears in the For You feed of people the system thinks are likely to be interested.

TikTok Ads Manager is a separate, web-based system. It has three levels: campaign, ad group and ad. You get a wider choice of objectives, many targeting dimensions, the ability to put several ads into one ad group to compare them, and a link to your website data through the TikTok Pixel so you can measure conversions. Promote is meant as a shortcut for people who want one video to travel further without learning the full advertising system.

The two are not completely separate. TikTok lets you link Promote to an Ads Manager account (Ad Account Integration) to use more advanced features and pay from your Ads Manager balance. That link affects refunds, which the payment section below explains.

Who can use Promote and what to prepare

TikTok's help page says Promote users must be at least 18 years old, and the Promote terms add that you must have reached the age of majority where you live. Promoting a LIVE has an extra condition: the account needs at least 1,000 followers. (LIVE works differently, so this guide focuses on regular videos.)

Check these before you tap promote:

  • The video has to pass two sets of rules. The Community Guidelines apply to every post, and advertising policies apply on top of them to paid promotion. A video that is fine to post can still fail review when you try to promote it.
  • Music and sound rights. The Promote terms state that you are solely responsible for everything in the promoted content, including sound recordings and musical works. TikTok's help page adds that promoted content must use original sound or sounds that can be used for commercial purposes.
  • The video must be public, because Promote's video picker draws from the public videos on your profile.
  • Account type. Creator and business accounts reach Promote from the tools menu on their profile. Some goals, such as leads and product purchases, are designed for business accounts and TikTok Shop sellers.

How to promote a TikTok video step by step

This is the sequence TikTok describes. Menu names may differ slightly by app version:

  1. Choose the video to push. A video that is already doing well without paid support is a sensible place to start.
  2. Open Promote in one of two ways: tap "..." on the video and choose Promote, or go to the menu on your profile, open TikTok Studio or Business suite, and choose Promote. Promote can also be used on the web.
  3. Choose the goal of the promotion.
  4. Choose the audience, either letting the system pick or setting it yourself.
  5. Set the budget and number of days, or pick a ready-made promotion pack where TikTok has preset the budget, duration and audience.
  6. Review and pay. The video is submitted for review, and you are notified when the promotion starts running.

Once it is live, results appear on the Promote dashboard, which TikTok says shows post and profile views, new followers, likes, comments, clicks to your website, and audience details such as gender, age and region.

Which goal to choose when you promote a TikTok video

The goal you pick is what the system will try to find for you. If you choose views, it looks for people likely to watch the video, not people likely to buy. TikTok currently groups Promote goals as follows.

Boost account

More video views, more followers and more profile views. This suits accounts building an audience, or brands that want to be known first. Be aware that views from a promotion do not mean those viewers will come back for the next video, so read new followers and profile visits alongside views.

Get leads

More TikTok messages, more calls, more form leads, or more messages through other messaging apps. TikTok's help page says lead campaigns only target users aged 18 or over, and lead goals need a Business Account. This suits service businesses that close sales through conversation, such as clinics, repair shops or courses. Before you choose it, make sure someone is ready to answer chats while the promotion runs, because a lead nobody answers is money spent for nothing.

Get sales

More website visits, more website conversions, more product purchases, and maximum GMV for TikTok Shop sellers. Measuring sales on a website requires tracking installed on the site first. Without it, the numbers you see stop at clicks.

Boost LIVE

More LIVE viewers and LIVE followers. The conditions and measurement are very different from regular videos, so plan it separately.

A simple rule for choosing a goal is to ask, "If this promotion works, which number has to move?" and pick the goal that matches it. Choosing views and then expecting sales is one of the most common mistakes, because the system was never told to look for buyers.

Audience: let the system choose or set it yourself

Promote offers two paths. The first uses the default audience that Promote suggests. The second, a custom promotion, lets you set the audience yourself; TikTok's best-practice page mentions gender, age, interest and geographic targeting, and the exact options vary by region.

If your business can only sell in certain areas, such as a restaurant in Chiang Mai or a service that only covers Bangkok and its surrounding provinces, setting the location yourself matters more than anything else, because views from other provinces can never turn into customers. For accounts that sell online and ship nationwide, starting with automatic targeting and then reading the audience details on the Promote dashboard helps you learn which groups actually respond, so you can narrow down in the next round.

Avoid setting an audience that is too narrow together with a small budget and a short duration. The system gets little room to learn, and the results can swing so much that you cannot tell whether the video is good or not.

How paying for TikTok Promote works

Promote billing differs from typical ad systems in several ways, so understand it before you confirm:

  • You pay upfront when you order. The Promote terms say payment is due immediately when you submit your order, and TikTok is not obliged to deliver anything before it receives full payment. Ads Manager, by contrast, offers options that charge on a cycle.
  • Payment methods. TikTok's help page lists TikTok Coins, credit or debit cards, bank accounts, gift cards, e-wallets, your Promote balance, your Ads Manager balance after integration, and GMV Pay, which uses TikTok Shop earnings to pay for promotions. Which methods actually work depends on your country.
  • Mobile fees. TikTok says paying with Coins in the app on iOS (Apple Pay), and on Android in some regions, can carry an extra mobile fee, while paying on the web does not. If you promote regularly, paying on the web is worth considering.
  • You cannot cancel an order. Once an order is confirmed, the terms say it cannot be cancelled. You can ask to pause it, but you still pay for whatever has already been served. TikTok's help page adds that you can end a promotion from the Promote order details page, and the remaining budget returns to your Promote balance.
  • Unused money. Money from closed or failed orders goes back to your Promote balance for future use. Withdrawing it depends on your device and region, and if you paid directly with Apple Pay you cannot withdraw from the Promote balance; Apple's rules apply instead.
  • The effect of linking to Ads Manager. Once Promote is integrated with Ads Manager, the Promote balance cannot be withdrawn. It can only be used on later campaigns, and refunds follow the Ads Manager process.

This guide does not quote a minimum budget in baht, because TikTok shows budget options in the app according to the account's country and currency. The most accurate figure is the one your own Promote screen shows during setup.

Will other people know you promoted a TikTok video?

Yes. The Promote terms say promoted content carries an advertising label on the platform, and TikTok reserves the right to add or change that disclosure itself. People who see the video in their For You feed can therefore tell it is a paid post.

What viewers cannot see is how much you spent or how you set the targeting. The video on your profile stays the same post, and views, likes and comments from the promotion are counted on that same video. If the video is sponsored content made for a brand, you still have your own duty to disclose it as the rules require.

Is TikTok Promote worth it, and who is it for?

Promote fits when the job matches what the tool does well:

  • Creators or small shops with a video that is already doing well on its own, who want more views or followers from it.
  • Service businesses that close sales by chat or phone and want more people to get in touch over a short period.
  • TikTok Shop sellers who want to push product videos to buyers.
  • Anyone who wants to test which video deserves more money before scaling up to a proper campaign.

Promote is a poor fit when you need detailed reporting, want to test several creatives within one structure, want to build audiences from customer lists or website visitors, or need several team members to reach the ad account without using the account owner's phone. In those cases, continuing to pay through Promote tends to scatter your data and makes it hard to compare results from one round to the next.

When to move from Promote to TikTok Ads Manager

The clearest signal is that your question changes, from "did more people watch this video?" to "how much revenue did this money bring back?" Other signals:

  1. You need to measure website sales. Ads Manager works with the TikTok Pixel and has conversion-side objectives that tell the system to find people likely to buy.
  2. You want to control targeting across many dimensions. Ads Manager offers age bands, gender, and location at country, state or province, and city level, plus many other options. Choices within one dimension combine as "or", and choices across dimensions combine as "and".
  3. You want to test several creatives at once. The campaign, ad group and ad structure lets you put several videos in one group and compare them.
  4. Your budget has grown and you need clear billing. Ads Manager offers manual payment (prepaying funds), automatic payment (charged when you reach a threshold or billing date), and monthly invoicing for eligible businesses. Note that once you switch to automatic payment, you cannot go back to manual payment.
  5. Several people need to work in the same account. A web-based ad account handles user permissions better than everyone using the owner's phone app.

Ads Manager objectives are grouped into three levels: Awareness (Reach), Consideration (Traffic, Video views, Community interaction) and Conversion (App promotion, Lead generation, Sales). Names and groupings can change over time, so check the live screen. Moving does not mean dropping Promote right away. Many accounts use Promote to quickly push a video that has just taken off, while the main sales-measured campaigns run in Ads Manager.

What this means for Thai marketers

Many Thai shops and brands start by tapping promote in the app because it is the easiest way in. Three things deserve attention in the Thai context. First, location: if you sell in-store or only deliver to some provinces, set the location yourself every time. Second, the sales channel: many Thai businesses close sales on LINE or by chat, which Promote supports through its goal for messages via other messaging apps, but someone has to reply in time. Third, payment: if you promote regularly, compare the fees for paying in the app versus on the web, and keep payment records for your accounts.

For TikTok Shop sellers, promoting product videos pays off immediately, but once sales start to depend more on ads, planning together with ecommerce marketing that tracks sales value helps you see which channel the sales really come from.

TikTok Promote FAQ

Can you promote on TikTok for free?

No, Promote is a paid advertising service, and you pay before TikTok serves the ad. Free visibility comes from making content the system recommends on its own.

What happens to the money if the video fails review?

Money from closed or failed orders goes back to your Promote balance for your next promotion. Whether you can withdraw it depends on your device, region and payment method, and if you paid directly with Apple Pay you cannot withdraw it from the Promote balance.

Can you stop a promotion halfway?

Yes. The Promote terms say a confirmed order cannot be cancelled, but you can ask to pause it and still pay for impressions already served. TikTok's help page says you can end a promotion from the Promote order details page, and the remaining budget returns to your Promote balance.

Can you use Promote and Ads Manager together?

Yes, and you can link the two accounts, but after linking the Promote balance cannot be withdrawn; it can only be used on later campaigns, and refunds follow the Ads Manager process.

If you have used Promote to the point where you want to know how much revenue each budget brings back, that is the time to set up campaigns properly.
