The impact of the war between Ukraine and Russia has triggered sanctions from U.S. President Joe Biden, resulting in several major technology companies unanimously suspending their platform usage in Russia. Initially, leading advertising companies like Google, Microsoft, and Facebook spearheaded this move. However, as the situation between Ukraine and Russia showed no signs of ending soon and potentially escalating, several technology companies in the online advertising industry joined forces to boycott Russia. This article summarizes for all marketers how each leading technology company is responding to this situation.

Search Engine Companies

As you know, two leading search engine companies, Google and Microsoft, have announced the cessation of advertising on all platforms in Russia. Their official announcements can be summarized as follows:

In addition to these two companies, Apple also declared a ban on Search Ads advertising in the App Store, even though it is not a search engine developer. They stated, “Advertising that appears on the App Store in Russia will be suspended indefinitely, and no new advertising campaigns will be created during this period.”

Social Media Companies

  • Meta: On March 4, Meta, including its subsidiaries Facebook and Instagram, announced a policy to cease advertising from any media outlet receiving funding from the Russian government.
  • LinkedIn: The popular job application platform announced a policy to cease all services in Russia.
  • Twitter: On February 25, Twitter announced the suspension of advertising in both Ukraine and Russia.
  • Reddit: On March 2, the webboard application Reddit announced the cessation of advertising from platforms originating in Russia and blocked access to any websites with destinations in Russia.
  • Snap Inc: On March 1, the popular video sharing application announced the suspension of all advertising operations in Russia and Belarus.
  • TikTok: The popular video sharing application has suspended the use of accounts operated by the Russian government, such as RT NEWS and Sputnik, but does not have a policy to stop advertising in Russia.

This joint boycott of Russia is a response to the conflict in Ukraine, with leading technology companies agreeing to halt advertising campaigns in Russia to reduce the visibility of fake news. While this may be regrettable for advertisers currently producing good campaigns in Russia, as it means fewer channels to promote their brands, if you want to promote your business and stay on trend in the digital world, you can contact us at Relevant Audience.
