No More Annoyance! Twitter is Testing the “Unmentioning” Feature

Many Twitter users probably experience the annoyance of being “mentioned” even when it’s not relevant. This can happen when someone replies to our tweet that we retweeted, causing our account to be mentioned as well. This issue has led to frequent complaints to Twitter, which announced in 2021 that it would begin developing the “Unmentioning” feature to solve this problem for users.

Twitter has now announced that it is currently testing the “Unmentioning” feature and making it available for trial on the website for some accounts. What will this new Twitter feature be like? Will it effectively address the annoyances faced by users? Let’s find out together.

What is the “Unmentioning” Feature?

If you sometimes feel annoyed by notifications that aren’t related to you while using Twitter, you no longer have to endure the annoyance. Twitter has released a test version of the “Unmentioning” feature that allows users to remove their mentions from conversations. This enables them to exit irrelevant discussions.

When using this feature, the system will immediately remove the user’s account mention from the original tweet, and the username will be converted to plain text (gray). No related notifications will be sent to annoy you. Users can still read the message from this tweet as usual. However, if users choose to use this feature, they will not be able to make any further edits if they want to rejoin the conversation later.

Currently, to use the feature, simply select the “Leave This Conversation” menu. Twitter also notes that the Unmentioning feature is currently limited to users on the website only, and will gradually be rolled out to other platforms in the future.

From a marketing perspective, this is a positive development for brands. Sometimes, a brand’s account may be mentioned negatively, even though the brand has no involvement in the matter. It’s good if brands can control their presence online more effectively.
