Every brand and business owner with their own website wants it to rank high and appear on the first page of the SERP (Search Engine Result Page). This requires SEO efforts. In addition, Google has recently updated Core Web Vitals, so what impact will this have on your website?

What are Core Web Vitals?

Core Web Vitals are factors or metrics used to measure the standard of website user experience delivery. Simply put, it’s a UX (User Experience) score, which is part of improving the overall Page Experience for website visitors.

Google updated Core Web Vitals to screen websites on the SERP (search result page) that have quality and provide a good user experience, such as web page loading speed (Google Pagespeed), mobile-friendliness, HTTPS, and rank those websites along with other algorithms.

In June 2021, Google officially started using Core Web Vitals and will continue to update them until they are complete in August 2021. However, website owners don’t need to worry too much. Ultimately, good and useful content is more important than Core Web Vitals and other factors. It will be used to judge only when websites have similar quality content. Websites that are faster and provide a better user experience will win and get a higher ranking.

How do Core Web Vitals affect rankings?

As mentioned earlier, Core Web Vitals will affect consideration in all search result rankings on both Mobile and Desktop. Websites that provide a better user experience will have a greater opportunity to receive better SEO rankings than competitors. However, Core Web Vitals are not the only factor. Website owners can consult with SEO experts who provide SEO services.

How are Core Web Vitals measured?

For measuring Core Web Vitals, Google uses 3 main factors:

Let’s see what each factor relates to on your website.

1. LCP (Largest Contentful Paint)

LCP is a factor related to the speed of loading elements on the webpage, such as images, text, and videos. It focuses on the largest content.

Google sets the standard that the largest content should take no more than 2.5 seconds to load, and if it takes more than 4 seconds, it should be improved.

Why does LCP take so long to load?

There are many reasons why elements take a long time to load, such as slow server response times, being blocked by JavaScript and CSS files during rendering (Render-Blocking JavaScript and CSS), and slow resource load times.

2. FID (First Input Delay)

First Input Delay is a metric that measures the speed (delay) of a website’s response to users. When users interact with something on the website, how quickly does the page change? How fast does the dropdown menu appear? How long does it take to submit data?

For this factor, Google states that websites that provide a good user experience should have an input latency of less than 100 milliseconds or 0.1 seconds.

What causes FID to respond slowly?

The main reason may be that the website processes too many scripts simultaneously, resulting in a longer FID because the browser is busy doing other things, which may cause a slower response.

3. CLS (Cumulative Layout Shift)

This factor is used to measure the stability of the layout on the website when there are shifts or changes, which can lead to a bad user experience, such as small fonts, buttons sticking together, and text being shifted.

Google looks at how little the CLS value is by observing how large the element that changed is and how much it moved. A good Cumulative Layout Shift score should be 0.1 or not exceed 0.25.

Why is the layout unstable?

This problem may occur because the layout or structure of the website changes when data is loaded, such as advertisements being inserted, font sizes changing, or pop-ups with uncertain sizes causing the layout to shift to an inappropriate location, which can lead to a bad experience for visitors.

Core Web Vitals may be new to SEO, but they are not insignificant because they are a key indicator of whether your website provides a good user experience and also affects rankings on the SERP.
