Anyone with experience in SEO knows that completely cleaning up your data from the SERPs can be quite a hassle, to the point where many people just let it slide because the process seems so complicated and chaotic. But what they may not realize is that leaving certain types of information out there can actually cause your SEO results to show up much more slowly. (Read how to remove unwanted data from Google Search pages.)
Recently, Google announced an update to its feature for removing Personal Information from the SERPs through a tool on Mobile Device, designed to make accessing the Removal Request form faster and more convenient. What are all the details, and what do marketers need to know? Today, Relevant Audience has gathered all the answers for you. Let's take a look together.
You Can Now Submit a Personal Information Removal Request Through the Google App on Mobile
As mentioned above, removing content from the SERPs is quite a hassle, especially when it comes to personal information that the creator did not upload to their own website. Previously, to remove content that violated Google's policies, you had to check whether the content in question actually met Google's violation criteria, then go to the Support Page to submit the Removal Request form, and wait for Google to take up the case.
But Google has now announced that if users come across a web page displaying personally identifiable information, they can submit a request directly through a Mobile Device immediately. Here's how:
That's all it takes for Google's support team to be able to review the details and process the removal of the data (De-Indexing). The information that Google will consider removing must include:
- Government ID number (ID Number)
- Bank account number (Bank Account)
- Credit card number (Credit Card)
- Images of handwritten signatures
- Images of copies of ID cards
- Official government records or medical documents containing identifying information
- Personal contact information (physical address, phone number, and email)
After submitting a request to the Support team, Google will send an email to confirm the request and notify users of any further action to be taken. However, if Google deems the information to be of broad public interest, such as news articles or information that is publicly recorded on government or related agency websites, these requests may be rejected by Google immediately.
When Will This Feature Be Available?
For this Google update, the feature is still in beta and is only available for Android users to try out first. Users of Mobile Devices on other operating systems may have to wait for Google to roll out further updates later on.
Final Thoughts
This update from Google represents a deeper understanding of the trend toward personal data security, by allowing everyday users to submit data removal requests conveniently and quickly in just a few clicks. For anyone who has seen their own personal information on Google Search and felt uneasy about it, don't forget to give this feature a try.
