If you regularly use Microsoft Bing for searching information, you’ll notice that when searching for information about the conflict between Ukraine and Russia, two tabs are prominently displayed. The first is an article section from various news agencies, and the second is a timeline showing brief explanations of events at different times. Let’s take a look at what these new updates entail.
The Opinions Sections
The Opinions tab displays news related to the ongoing conflict. Originally, this appeared in the News tab, but Microsoft has now added a new tab to disseminate news and opinions regarding the situation between Ukraine and Russia. This makes it more prominent, similar to Google’s Top Stories feature, and will appear in the Main Column of the Search Results page as shown in the image.
The Timelines Sections
The timeline appears on the right side of the Search Results page, displaying a vertical line indicating various events related to the Ukraine-Russia situation. As seen in the image, it starts with the declaration of Ukrainian independence after the collapse of the Soviet Union on August 24, 1991, and continues to the events resulting from the annexation of Crimea by the Russian Federation, escalating to the current situation.
However, one interesting observation regarding the difference between the Opinions and Timeline tabs added by Microsoft Bing is the referencing of data sources. The timeline tab draws data from the free encyclopedia website Wikipedia, while the Opinions tab draws data from news websites around the world (excluding Russian ones).
According to George Nguyen, a renowned columnist from Search Engine Land, the Opinions tab allows Bing to easily filter relevant news for users and responds to sanctions against Russia, including reducing misinformation. Similarly, the Timeline tab helps users understand how each event occurred. Overall, these new features from Microsoft enhance user convenience and help filter results for greater accuracy. This is directly beneficial to users, but marketers looking for new opportunities to promote advertising campaigns need not worry. While currently limited to News Publishers and this conflict situation, it is likely that this feature will be used more widely in the future.
