Any marketer who keeps up with Google's update news knows full well that every year Google rolls out new Ranking Systems all the time, and it also retires some algorithm systems that are no longer in use. Importantly, each time an update is released, it usually comes with strange new terms or abbreviations, which often leaves many novice marketers feeling confused.

Most recently, on the Google Search Central Blog, Google published an article defining the various terms related to the content of its website ranking algorithm updates. For anyone who is a beginner just starting out with online marketing across Google's various channels, this is something you must not miss and should jot down carefully. If you have your notebook and pen ready, let's dive in.

Ranking Systems That Google Still Uses

For Ranking Systems, or the algorithm systems that work behind the scenes to control content according to the algorithm's framework, there are currently many Systems that Google still uses, as follows:

  • BERT stands for Bidirectional Encoder Representations from Transformers. It is a system that helps Google's algorithm learn human language better, enabling it to understand how combinations of words can convey different meanings and intentions.
  • Crisis Information Systems is Google's automated alert system that prepares sets of information for times of crisis, such as SOS alerts for natural disasters, or as seen during the recent COVID-19 pandemic.
  • Deduplication Systems is a system that checks for Duplicate Content, or redundant content, on Google Search to avoid displaying web pages with identical or very similar content.
  • Exact Match Domain System is a system that helps prevent Google's algorithm from giving too much credit to websites that register a domain identical to the search query, which also helps prevent spam.
  • Freshness Systems is a system designed to help Google Search emphasize the display of content that is fresh or original.
  • Helpful Content System is a system designed to give internet users confidence that they will see useful content rather than content created mainly to chase SEO rankings.
  • Link Analysis Systems and Page Rank is a system that helps determine what a given page of a website is about and which pages are the most helpful to Google users, by considering how they link to one another.
  • Local News Systems is a system that displays various local news content when searches are made through Google.
  • MUM stands for Multitask Unified Model. It is an algorithm system developed to help understand the information or meaning of the words used in searches on Google, making it convenient to find information covering every angle within a single query.
  • Neural Matching is a system that helps Google capture search terms and process them in new ways. For example, if someone searches "why does my computer show a blue screen," the system might suggest a phrase like "computer has a virus," and so on.
  • Original Content System is a system that helps Google display only content that is the original source.
  • Removal-based Demotion System is a system that helps remove various pieces of content on websites that have received a large number of removal requests.
  • Page Experience System is a Google system that helps evaluate whether a web page can create a good experience for visitors.
  • Passage Ranking System is a system that helps rank search terms in terms of specific paragraphs and passages. On the searcher's side, if difficult search terms or long sentences are used, the system helps display content more accurately.
  • Product Reviews Systems is a system that benefits the writing of high-quality reviews. The more in-depth the analysis or the more references to various data, the greater the effect on SEO scores.
  • RankBrain is a system developed to focus on helping Google's algorithm recognize new search terms that Google has never encountered before, based primarily on User Signals. That is, if a search term is used and the result is satisfactory, then the next time the same search term is used, there is a chance of encountering content from that web page again.
  • Reliable Information Systems is a system that helps Google display content that is accurate and trustworthy.
  • Site Diversity System is a system that helps prevent Google from displaying more than two listings of content from web pages originating from the same URL within the Top Results.
  • Spam Detection Systems is a system that detects content that violates Google's policies.

Google's Retired Ranking Systems

The following are the terms for Ranking Systems that Google has stopped using. Some systems may have been adjusted to be used in combination with other systems mentioned above. They are as follows:

  • Hummingbird is a system that helps display more relevant search results by understanding the Search Intent of the searcher.
  • Mobile Friendly Ranking System is a system developed to rank content for display on mobile phones. It is currently incorporated into Google's Page Experience System.
  • Page Speed System is a system launched in 2018 that helps display content with fast loading speeds on web pages on mobile phones. It is currently incorporated into Google's Page Experience System.
  • Panda System is a system launched in 2011 that emphasizes displaying content that is high-quality and original. It became part of Google's Core Ranking System in 2015.
  • Penguin System is a system launched back in 2012 to reduce the visibility of websites with various spam links.
  • Secure Sites System is a system launched in 2014, developed to make websites more secure with HTTPS. It is currently part of Google's Page Experience System.
