Google Maps puts Message next to Call: November Small Business Bulletin

TL;DR

  • Google's Lisa Landsman posted the Small Business Bulletin on 5 November 2026: Maps now shows a Message button next to Call on Android and iOS, routing to WhatsApp or SMS.
  • The bulletin says Business Profile in Gemini is rolling out to Workspace accounts, but Google's help page 17142585, read 7 November 2026, still excludes work accounts.
  • Restaurants can now opt out of specific third-party ordering links and tag dishes Gluten-Free, Dairy-Free, Halal or Kosher; Google says Halal and Kosher only where certified.
  • Google's updated appeals tool shows the violated policy upfront and takes evidence before submission, but each appeal can be submitted only once.

Google's November 2026 Small Business Bulletin, posted on 5 November 2026 by Lisa Landsman in the Google Business Profile Community, confirms that Google Maps now shows a Message button right next to the Call button on Business Profiles that have chat set up, on both Android and iOS. The same bulletin says Google Business Profile in Gemini is rolling out to Google Workspace accounts, that owners can now describe opening hours in plain language, that restaurants can switch off individual third-party ordering links and tag dishes as Halal, Kosher, Gluten-Free or Dairy-Free, and that the appeals tool for suspended profiles has been simplified. Google did not say which countries get each change, and nothing in the bulletin confirms availability in Thailand.

What is in the November Small Business Bulletin

The bulletin, titled "Google Small Business Bulletin: Holiday Checklist and New Features", was published as a thread in the Google Business Profile Community. Search Engine Journal, which covered it on 6 November 2026, identifies Landsman as Google's Head of Industry Engagement and SMB Success. The post mixes a holiday checklist with several product updates, and it reads as a newsletter rather than a formal changelog. Some items are described as live, one as "rolling out now", and none come with dates by country.

The table below sets out each update and the status Google gives it in the bulletin.

Message button now sits next to Call on Google Maps

The change with the widest reach is on Maps. Google says businesses that already chat with customers through Google Search now have the same line open on Google Maps. In the bulletin's words, customers on Android and iOS "can now find a prominent Message button right next to 'Call'" on a Maps listing. Before this, Google says, finding chat on Maps "required scrolling deep down into your profile". The button now appears whether a customer views the profile, opens the expanded header or uses the bottom action bar.

Tapping Message sends the customer to the channel the business has set up, which the bulletin says includes WhatsApp and SMS or text. Google's suggested next step is to double-check that the preferred messaging channel is properly linked so chats land where the business wants them. Google's chat help page (answer 15013580) adds two details: if a business adds both WhatsApp and text, customers see only the text option, and chat options are available in select regions, which the page does not name, and might not be available for every profile.

The practical effect is that a profile's chat link now sits in one of the most visible buttons on the listing. Search Engine Journal points out that a dead link or an unread inbox now occupies that spot, and suggests sending a test message through every profile before the holiday rush.

Business Profile in Gemini: Workspace access rolling out

The bulletin says two updates are coming to Google Business Profile in Gemini, the connection that lets owners manage a profile by typing "@Google Business Profile" in the Gemini web app.

  • Workspace account access is labelled "rolling out now". Google says owners "can soon" connect a verified profile with a Google Workspace business email instead of switching to a personal Gmail account.
  • Photo and video uploads in chat are labelled live. Owners can attach media from their device or Google Photos to update profile visuals or to write and publish a post in the same prompt.

To use Workspace, the bulletin says a Workspace administrator must first enable Gemini app access in the Admin Console. The owner then opens gemini.google.com signed in with the business account, types @Google Business Profile and follows the authorization prompt. Google's example prompts include setting special Black Friday hours of 10 AM to 9 PM, summarizing reviews from the past 60 days into the top 3 strengths and 2 areas for improvement, and asking for 3 additional secondary categories.

The help page and the bulletin disagree

Google's own help article for the Gemini connection (answer 17142585), read on 7 November 2026, still says owners must sign in with a personal Google Account and that "for now" the feature is not available with a work or school Google Account. That contradicts the Workspace rollout in the bulletin, a gap Search Engine Journal also flagged on 6 November 2026. The most likely reading is that the help page has not caught up with a staged rollout, but Google has not said so.

The same help page now says the connection is "Available wherever the Gemini web app is supported". An archived copy of the same page from 13 October 2026 listed the European Economic Area and the United Kingdom as unsupported and limited the feature to 12 languages, a change Search Engine Journal also reported. Neither restriction appears on the current page. The bulletin itself says nothing about regions or languages, and the current help page still limits linking to an owner or manager of only one verified Business Profile, in the Gemini web app only.

Opening hours from a written description

Google says Business Profile now lets owners describe their hours in natural language, and the system parses the text into the standard hours fields. The bulletin's examples are "Tuesdays and Thursdays by appointment" and "Closed for lunch 1:00 to 2:30 PM". The path is Edit profile, then Hours, then the "Generate your hours" section. Google's hours help page (answer 15300403) says the tool is available in select regions and languages, and owners can review and edit the generated hours before saving.

This matters most for businesses whose hours do not fit a fixed weekly grid, such as clinics with appointment days, shops that close at midday, or venues with seasonal breaks. Owners should still check what the parser produced, especially for holiday closures.

The bulletin lists two restaurant updates. First, owners can now manage and opt out of specific third-party delivery providers directly from the Business Profile dashboard, instead of asking each delivery platform to disconnect its feed. Google frames this as letting the restaurant decide which partners appear on its profile, while noting that diners often stay with platforms where they already have subscriptions or stored payment details. Google's ordering help page (answer 10842217) says a provider is only hidden completely when it is turned off for both pickup and delivery.

Second, the menu editor's dietary tags now go beyond Vegetarian and Vegan to include Gluten-Free, Dairy-Free, Halal and Kosher. Owners open Edit menu, select a dish and tick the badges. Google gives searches such as "gluten-free dinner near me" and "halal takeout" as cases where tagged items help a restaurant stand out, and its note is explicit: halal and kosher should only be applied where certified.

A simpler appeals tool for suspended profiles

Google says it has streamlined the Business Profile appeal process with fewer clicks. In the updated Appeals Tool, owners choose the affected profile and immediately see the policy that was violated and whether the profile is eligible for an appeal. They can then upload official documents, such as utility bills, tax certificates or business licenses that show the business name and address matching the profile, and add a short factual note before submitting. The bulletin warns that appeals can only be submitted once, so the proof must match the profile details before the owner sends it. Google's appeals help page (answer 4569145) describes the evidence as optional.

The holiday checklist

The bulletin's checklist asks owners to set special holiday hours, update menus, services or product catalogs, publish seasonal offers with Google Posts (directly or through Gemini), turn on customer messaging so people can reach the business through Search and Maps, and audit appointment, ordering and pickup links.

What this means for Thai marketers

The following is analysis based on the sources above. A Message button beside Call could change how enquiries reach Thai businesses on Maps, if chat is available for Thai profiles. Google has not said that it is. The bulletin lists WhatsApp and SMS or text as destinations and does not mention LINE. Thai businesses should open their Business Profile, check whether chat options appear, and if they do, decide who answers and how fast.

The Halal badge is directly relevant to Thai restaurants serving Muslim diners, but Google's condition is strict: certified dishes only. Restaurants with halal certification can tag eligible dishes once the badge appears in their menu editor. The ordering-link control helps restaurants that no longer work with a particular delivery provider remove its button themselves.

The appeals change matters to any Thai business that has had a profile suspended. Since appeals can be sent only once, owners should gather documents in which the name and address match the profile exactly before opening the tool. For businesses managing several locations, the Gemini connection remains limited to a single verified profile, according to Google's help page. Teams that want a structured review of their profiles can look at local SEO services, and those connecting Maps visibility to wider search work can see SEO in Thailand.

Frequently asked questions

Is the Google Maps Message button available in Thailand?

Google has not said. The bulletin confirms the button on Android and iOS without listing countries, and Google's chat help page says chat is available in select regions without naming them. Check your own Business Profile to see whether chat options appear.

Which messaging apps does the Message button connect to?

The bulletin names WhatsApp and SMS or text. Google's chat help page says that if a business adds both, customers see only the text option. LINE is not mentioned in the bulletin.

Can I use Business Profile in Gemini with a Google Workspace account?

The bulletin says Workspace access is rolling out now, but Google's help page, checked on 7 November 2026, still says work and school accounts are not supported. A Workspace administrator must enable Gemini app access in the Admin Console before it can work.

Can any restaurant add a Halal badge to its menu?

No, Google says halal and kosher badges should only be applied where certified. The other new tags are Gluten-Free and Dairy-Free, added alongside the existing Vegetarian and Vegan options in the menu editor.

How many times can I appeal a suspended Business Profile?

Once. The bulletin says appeals can only be submitted once, so upload documents such as utility bills, tax certificates or business licenses that match your profile's name and address before you submit.
