How to Migrate Goals from UA to GA4?

According to Charles Farina, a renowned Data Analytics expert, brands or marketers who are starting to use Google Analytics 4 can now migrate goals from their Universal Analytics Property (UA). Google calls this tool the “Migration Tool”.

Simply go to the Setup Assistant page on GA4, and you will find options to easily import data, saving marketers time. This article will guide you through the basics of migrating goals from UA to GA4. After reading this, you’ll be able to follow along immediately.

How Does the Migration Tool Work?

Of course, for the goal data that users choose to migrate to Google Analytics 4, the system will automatically create it as an Event. Regarding the migration of goals from Universal Analytics Properties to Google Analytics 4, there are criteria for goal migration. Currently, two types of goals can be migrated:

Other goal types, such as Number of Pages/Screens per Session or Smart Goal, cannot be migrated at this time.

Let’s Get Started Migrating Data

Using the Migration Tool starts by:

  1. On Google Analytics 4, click Admin
  1. In the Account Column, make sure the selected account is correct (if you only have one account, the system will select it automatically).
  2. In the Property section, select the Google Analytics 4 Property.
  3. Click Setup Assistant.
  4. In the Conversions section, click Get Started at “Import Existing Goals from Connected Universal Analytics Properties”.
  1. Then, select the goals on UA that you want to create a Conversion Event in Google Analytics 4.
  2. Click Import Selected Conversions in the upper right corner.

The system will then display a confirmation message at the bottom left of the screen, completing the data migration process. However, the system currently limits the number of goals to a maximum of 30. If you have any further questions, you can read them here.

For brands or marketers who are starting to transition all their work to Google Analytics 4 according to Google’s plan (Google has announced the discontinuation of UA services), choosing to migrate data instead of creating new ones is likely the most convenient way to save time.
