WordPress 6.0 What’s New? Now Available for Full Use

Anyone in the Web Developer field has probably been feeling anxious lately, as WordPress version 6.0 is about to be released for full use soon.

It must be said that the change from version 5.9 to version 6.0 is quite significant. If you want to know what new features or improvements there are, take out your notebooks because this article will delve into the key details of this update.

WordPress Block Improvements

The Block Editor updates are the most important on WordPress 6.0. There have been many adjustments and additions, including:

  • Block Locking UI This locking function has been available since version 5.9, but previously required code editing to use. Now, the UI has been updated by adding the function to the Toolbar, allowing immediate use when needed.
  • Featured Image Expansion In version 6.0, Featured Images will no longer be limited to the Featured Image Block alone. They can also be placed in Media Blocks, Text Blocks, and even Cover Blocks. This change will help create more diverse image designs on blogs.

Theme Customization with Global Styles Switching

Sometimes, we may not want to change the main theme of a website, but just add a new feel for users. Global Styles Switching is one of the features that WordPress users have been waiting for. This feature allows users to design Theme Styles with more diversity by switching between different Theme color schemes.

To use it, simply go to Browse Styles in the Global Styles section, and you can select various Theme Styles immediately.

Block Theme Export is Now Possible

When creating a website, the theme is one of the key components that can greatly enhance user appeal. Of course, WordPress has tools to help design themes in the style you want. Now, WordPress 6.0 will reduce the workload for web developers by adding a Block Theme Export Tool, which allows you to download the current theme and export it for use elsewhere.

After creating the theme, in the Site Editor interface, go to Options and click the Export button. You can then download the theme (as a ZIP file).

Previously, WordPress had already announced its Release Schedule, with the following details:

Beta Version 1 – April 12, 2022

Beta Version 2 – April 19, 2022

Beta Version 3 – April 26, 2022

Candidate Version 1 – May 3, 2022

Candidate Version 2 – May 10, 2022

Candidate Version 3 – May 17, 2022

Dry Run – May 23, 2022

WordPress 6.0 Version – May 24, 2022

As you can see from the timeline above, WordPress has been gradually releasing test versions for users to try out. For those who want to try it out before the official release, you can install it through a Local Development Environment as follows:

  1. Open DevKinsta and create a Local WordPress Website
  2. Then, go to the Dashboard on WordPress, select Plugins >> Add New
  3. Install a plugin called WordPress Beta Tester
  4. Activate the plugin and go to Tools >> Beta Testing
  5. In Beta Testing, select Bleeding Edge in the Option and click Save
  6. Go back to the WordPress Dashboard, click on Updates, and select the test version to update immediately

The above updates are just some of the key ones. It must be said that WordPress 6.0 also includes many minor updates, such as Bootstrap/Load, Cache API, and improvements to the performance of various features, as well as 97 bug fixes. This update from version 5.9 to 6.0 is another important step for WordPress, so anyone who is a web developer should not miss studying this new update to keep up with the upcoming changes.
