Google Applies AI to Lens and Multisearch to Make Searching More Accurate

Right now, no matter where you look, you can't escape the topic of AI, which is taking every industry by storm, especially within the Search Engine space, where AI is playing an increasingly important role. So it's no surprise to see Google, the number one Search Engine, upgrading its own search features to be more powerful, in order to meet user needs more precisely and accurately than before. 

Previously, Google itself has spoken many times about how it plans to apply AI in the future, and most recently Google announced its use of AI to enhance its Search Features for more accurate search performance. Let's take a look at the details together.

Google Lens 

Google Lens is a feature from Google that was unveiled at the Search On event. In its early days it was a service within Google Assistant that was limited mostly to Android phones. This feature is powered by an AI system that Google calls the "Multitask Unified Model," or MUM, which can understand information in various formats, whether text, images, or video. 

Today, Google states that Google Lens is used more than 10 billion times per month and can be used across every platform through the Google app.

Likewise, there is another new feature powered by the MUM system, Google's latest AI development, that helps users find additional information from photos they have taken. For example, when you want to shop for clothing, sometimes you already have a style you like in mind but want it in a different color. You can use the photo of that outfit and search for the color you like, then wait for the system to go and find information on where this style of clothing is being sold in the color you want. This Multisearch feature is being rolled out for use worldwide, and it is supported in every country and language where Google Lens is available.

As we all know well, we are currently in the midst of a competition over AI technology, where many Big Tech companies are each trying to find ways to apply it to their own features in order to meet today's user needs. This is especially true within the Search Engine space, where Microsoft has now teamed up with ChatGPT. This makes it interesting to see whether Google will pull out its trump card to improve its own search features, or perhaps launch new AI-powered features in 2023.
