Meta launches Facebook Verified, a free selfie-based verification badge

Meta announced Facebook Verified on 24 July 2026: a free badge that verifies there is a real person behind a profile, using a simple selfie-based verification process. No subscription is required. Meta says you verify once, and the badge travels with you across Facebook. It shows up first on Marketplace, Dating profiles, Groups and user profiles, with Feed posts planned later. The rollout is gradual and starts in select markets, which Meta has not named.

What Meta announced

The post on the Meta Newsroom describes Facebook Verified as "a free badge that verifies there's a real person behind a profile using a simple selfie-based verification process." The wording is worth reading closely. This is a personhood check. It is not a fame check, and Meta has not described it as a document-based identity check.

Two details do most of the work. It costs nothing and carries no subscription. And verification happens once, after which the badge follows the account across the surfaces where Facebook displays it.

Who is eligible for Facebook Verified

  • Facebook users aged 18 and over.
  • Accounts in good standing under Meta's Community Standards, with the fraud and deceptive conduct policies named specifically.
  • Pages and ProMode accounts are excluded.

That exclusion is the one brands will feel. If your business lives on a Page, the Page does not get this badge. The badge attaches to people, and on Facebook a lot of buying and selling still happens through personal profiles.

Where the badge appears

Marketplace, Dating profiles, Groups and user profiles come first. Feed posts are planned but were not part of the launch. The ordering says something about the problem Meta is aiming at. Marketplace and Groups are where strangers transact with strangers, and a fake profile does the most damage there.

Availability: Meta has not published the market list

Meta says the rollout is gradual, beginning in select markets, with plans to expand globally. It has not said which markets. Anyone claiming the badge is already live in a specific country is going past what the announcement contains. There is no published availability date for Thailand, and the announcement gives no basis for guessing one.

Why a free badge changes the trust math

Verification on social platforms has mostly been sold as a subscription. Paying for a badge proves you have a working payment method, which is a thin signal of authenticity. Facebook Verified is free, with no subscription attached, so a different group of people ends up holding it: not the ones willing to spend, but the ones willing to show their face.

For a legitimate seller that flips the default. Right now an unbadged Marketplace seller looks like everyone else. If a free badge becomes common on a surface, an unbadged seller starts to look like a decision.

What this means for Thai marketers

Facebook Marketplace and Groups carry real commercial volume in Thailand, and buyer hesitation on those surfaces is usually about the seller rather than the product. A free authenticity signal would be a cheap trust lever for small sellers if and when it arrives. Since Meta has not confirmed the first markets, the sensible move is to get ready rather than plan around a date.

  • Work out whether your Facebook commerce runs through a Page or through people. Only people can be verified.
  • Check that the personal accounts representing your business are in good standing under the Community Standards, particularly the fraud and deceptive conduct rules. That is the eligibility gate.
  • Keep expectations separate from paid delivery. A badge does not change targeting or auction behaviour, and Facebook Ads results still come down to offer, creative and audience.

Where buyers already meet you inside Marketplace and Groups, profile trust sits alongside the rest of your ecommerce marketing rather than replacing any of it. A verified admin is more credible inside a Group, but the Group still needs a reason to exist. Paid social keeps its own job, which is why social advertising and profile trust are worth running as separate tracks.

Questions people are asking

Does Facebook Verified cost anything?

No. Meta describes it as free, with no subscription required.

Can a business Page get the badge?

No. Meta excludes Pages and ProMode accounts.

Is it available in Thailand?

Meta has not published the market list. The announcement says the rollout starts in select markets and expands globally, without naming them.

Do I need to verify separately for Marketplace and Groups?

No. Meta says you verify once and the badge travels with you across Facebook.

What to watch next

Feed is the open question. Meta says Feed posts are planned, and that is where a personhood badge would change how ordinary content gets read. Until it lands, this stays a Marketplace and Groups story, which is useful enough for anyone whose buyers show up there.
