Google's AI Max for Shopping is rolling out more widely, and it has now been spotted running inside Standard Shopping campaigns. According to Search Engine Land, the feature matches Shopping ads to conversational, long-tail queries, writes ad copy automatically from Merchant Center feed attributes, and can send clicks to a landing page that Google chooses. It is still a beta.

If you run Shopping campaigns, the short version is this: some of the AI matching and text generation that used to live mainly in Performance Max is now reaching a campaign type where you keep more manual control.

What AI Max for Shopping actually does

The feature covers a few distinct jobs, and it helps to separate them.

Query matching for long-tail searches

AI Max matches your Shopping ads to conversational and long-tail queries that your existing product targeting might not reach on its own. These are the longer, more specific searches people type when they know roughly what they want but describe it in their own words.

Auto-generated ad copy from your feed

Instead of relying only on the text you write, AI Max can generate ad copy from Merchant Center feed attributes. Search Engine Land points to examples like materials and fit, so a product's fabric or sizing detail can be pulled into the ad text. That puts more weight on how complete and accurate your feed is.

Final URL Expansion

AI Max adds Final URL Expansion, which can send a click to a page that Google judges more relevant than the one you set. This is the part most advertisers will want to check first, because the page Google picks is not always the page you intended for that product.

What you still control

You keep your bidding controls and your product targeting. You can also turn Final URL Expansion off if you would rather every click land on the URL you specified. So this is not a case of handing the whole campaign to automation. It adds AI-driven reach and text on top of a structure you still steer.

Why this matters

Performance Max already offered AI matching and automated creative, but it also asked advertisers to give up a lot of visibility and manual control. Bringing similar capabilities into Standard Shopping gives retailers a middle option: incremental reach on complex, conversational queries while keeping more of the manual levers they are used to.

For accounts that were hesitant to move budget into PMax, this is worth watching. You can test AI-driven matching inside a campaign type you already understand, rather than committing to a black box.

What this means for Thai marketers

If you sell online in Thailand and run Shopping campaigns, two things deserve attention.

First, audit your Merchant Center feed. Because AI Max can build ad copy from attributes like material and fit, thin or inconsistent feed data now shows up directly in your ads. Fields that were once optional are doing more work.

Second, make a deliberate decision about Final URL Expansion. A Google-chosen landing page may not match the local product page you intended, which can matter when you have Thai-language pages, region-specific stock, or separate URLs for different variants. If sending shoppers to the exact right page is important for your store, test with expansion off first, then decide whether to enable it.

Since this is still a beta, treat any early results as a test rather than a settled tactic. Watch which queries it brings in and where the clicks actually land before you scale.

FAQ

Is AI Max for Shopping available to everyone?

Not yet. It remains a beta and is rolling out more widely, with recent sightings inside Standard Shopping campaigns.

Can I turn off the landing page changes?

Yes. Final URL Expansion can be switched off, so clicks go only to the URLs you set.

Do I lose control of bids and targeting?

No. You keep your bidding and product-targeting controls. AI Max adds matching and generated copy on top.

Where to go from here

The practical first step is a feed review, followed by a clear choice on Final URL Expansion. If you want help auditing your product feed or structuring your Google Ads campaigns around this change, our ecommerce marketing team can work through it with you.
