Twitter Launches “View Count” Feature, Now You Can See How Many People Have Seen a Tweet

Twitter had previously announced that it was testing a feature to count Views, displaying how many times a tweet had been read or seen, so that users would know how many people had already read or seen a given tweet. It caused quite a stir among users, because normally most people on Twitter only know how many people have retweeted (Retweet) their tweet and how many have hit favorite (Favorite), but there was no official view-count display (because in reality Twitter already has something called Impressions for Twitter for Business).

Most recently, Elon Musk, Twitter's well-known new CEO, announced on the morning of December 23 (our local time) that Twitter has officially launched the “View Count” feature. So what are all the details? Let's take a look together.

Twitter Tested the “View Count” Feature for More Than 7 Years

According to a report by The Verge back in 2014, we learned that Twitter had plans to develop a feature that would let users know how many people had read or seen a given tweet. From that day until now, more than 7 years have passed. Originally, the concept of checking statistical figures like this on Twitter was available only to brands or marketers using Twitter for Business, and those statistical figures were collectively referred to as “Impressions.” This is considered the starting point that prompted Twitter's developers to envision letting ordinary users see various numbers as well, whether the number of people who hit favorite or the number of people who retweeted, which were added later on.

In any case, before this, Twitter users had been eagerly awaiting a feature that would let them know how many people had read or seen their tweets, in order to measure the reach and popularity of each tweet.

Twitter Officially Updates the View Count Feature

Most recently, from a tweet by Elon Musk, Twitter's current CEO, he tweeted about the official launch of the View Count feature. The details in the tweet stated: “Twitter has launched the View Count feature, which will display the number of people who have seen a given tweet, letting users know how popular a tweet is. This feature will help make Twitter more enjoyable to use, because previously more than 90% of users on the platform were not very Active, such as retweeting, hitting favorite, or commenting on other users' tweets as much as they should.”

The way this feature works is similar to displaying the number of likes, retweets, and comments, updating in real time whenever there is an Action such as reading or viewing a given tweet.

Closing Thoughts

Even though, from Elon Musk's perspective, this feature may help encourage Twitter users to engage with the platform more, it was still a point of debate at the time, with Twitter expressing concern about whether it would lead to more people using Twitter or, on the contrary, make people feel less inclined to tweet to the point that they might switch to another platform. But what's certain is that this feature is definitely beneficial for brands, creators, and marketers, who will be able to measure the reach of their various content far more conveniently.
