TL;DR
- OpenAI emailed ChatGPT advertisers on 20 Oct 2026 that creative enhancements would be enabled for new and existing self-serve campaigns.
- Enhancements can rewrite headlines and descriptions, translate ad text, resize images and switch the destination URL to another page on the advertiser's site.
- Start dates conflict: the email says Fri 30 Oct, PPC Land saw Thu 29 Oct on 21 Oct, and the help page now says 'Thursday, October 31', which is a Saturday.
- The opt-out is in Ads Manager > Manage settings; campaign settings override the account default and earlier opt-outs are kept.
- OpenAI offers no preview of every variation and says overall metrics alone do not establish the effect of enhancements.
OpenAI will switch on "creative enhancements" for ChatGPT Ads automatically at the end of October 2026. Once the setting is on, OpenAI's system can rewrite ad headlines and descriptions, translate ad text, resize images and send clicks to a different page on the advertiser's website, and these versions can run without the advertiser approving each one. The change covers new and existing campaigns unless the advertiser opts out in Ads Manager. OpenAI's own messages disagree on the exact start date, so anyone who wants to opt out should do it before Thursday 29 October 2026.
What OpenAI announced on 20 October
OpenAI emailed ChatGPT advertisers on 20 October 2026. The email, published the same day by Search Engine Roundtable, said: "Starting Friday, October 30, 2026, we'll enable creative enhancements for your new and existing self-serve campaigns." OpenAI also maintains a help article on the feature, Creative enhancements for ChatGPT Ads on the OpenAI Help Center, which explains what changes, how to opt out and how to read the reporting.
The help article states the purpose in one line. Creative enhancements are "designed to make your ads more relevant to the conversation and user interests, helping to improve performance while reducing work to create multiple versions." OpenAI says it uses "your existing ad and landing-page content to adapt your message."
The sentence advertisers should read twice is about approval. OpenAI writes that variations "may be prepared in advance or created in real time based on the conversation" and that "when enabled, these ads can run automatically without requiring you to review or approve each version." In its FAQ, the help article adds that the experience "does not provide a preview of every variation."
Why the start date is unclear
OpenAI's communications have given three different start dates in four days.
- The 20 October email to advertisers said Friday 30 October 2026.
- PPC Land reported on 21 October that the help article said Thursday 29 October 2026 at that point.
- On 23 October, with the page marked "Updated: 4 hours ago", the help article said "Starting Thursday, October 31, 2026" and told advertisers they can opt out "before October 31". 31 October 2026 is a Saturday, so the weekday and the date in that sentence cannot both be correct.
OpenAI has not explained the changes. This article therefore says "the end of October 2026" for the switch-on. If you plan to opt out, do it before Thursday 29 October, the earliest date any OpenAI source has shown. The help article also says settings can be changed "at any time", so a missed deadline does not lock an account in. Any enhanced ads served before you change the setting, though, will already have run.
What creative enhancements can change
OpenAI lists four kinds of change. The table below sets out each one as the help article describes it.
| Ad element | What OpenAI says may happen |
|---|---|
| Headlines and descriptions | New or updated text "to connect your offering to the conversation or user interests" |
| Language | "We may translate your ad text into another language" |
| Images | "Images may be resized to fit the ad format" |
| Destination URLs | The URL "may be optimized to direct people to a relevant page on your website" |
According to the help article, enhancements can take three inputs into account: "the context of the conversation or user interests", "your existing ad" and "content from the ad's landing page." It does not say how much weight each input carries, or whether some categories or accounts see more changes than others.
OpenAI's worked example
The help article gives one example. In a conversation about planning quick weeknight dinners, an ad headlined "Fresh groceries delivered" could become "Groceries for quick weeknight dinners". The description "Order fresh produce and pantry staples for delivery." could become "Get fresh produce and pantry staples delivered for your weeknight meals." OpenAI notes that the example "assumes the original ad and landing page support the product and delivery details shown" and that "actual wording may vary."
The example is a gentle one: the new copy stays inside the original claim. The help article shows no example of a translated ad or a swapped destination URL.
How to opt out, and which setting wins
OpenAI's instruction is short: advertisers "can opt out before October 31 or change your settings at any time in Ads Manager. Select Manage settings." A screenshot published by Search Engine Roundtable shows the setting switched on in its own account. PPC Land, describing that screenshot, reported a single "Creative enhancement" card whose one toggle covers all four change types. On that basis you cannot keep image resizing while blocking translation. The help article does not describe any finer control.
Two rules decide which setting applies to a given campaign:
- "Existing account- and campaign-level opt-outs are preserved." If you opted out earlier, OpenAI says that choice stays in place.
- "Campaign-specific settings take priority over your account default." An account-level opt-out does not override a campaign where the feature is switched on, and an account left on does not override a campaign you switched off.
So the check has two layers. Set the account default first. Then open every live campaign and confirm its own setting, because a campaign set to on will win over an account set to off.
A short checklist before the switch-on
The steps below are a practical suggestion from Relevant Audience, not OpenAI guidance.
- Open Ads Manager, select Manage settings and note the current account default.
- List every active and scheduled campaign and check each campaign-level setting.
- Decide campaign by campaign. Regulated offers, campaigns with legally approved copy and campaigns tied to one landing page are candidates for opting out. Broad prospecting campaigns may be reasonable places to test.
- Take dated screenshots of the settings so there is a record if a question about served copy comes up later.
- Check again after the switch-on, since the date has already moved more than once.
What OpenAI asks advertisers to prepare
Enhancements are built from existing ads and landing pages, so OpenAI asks advertisers to give the system accurate material. The help article lists three steps. Keep ads and landing pages current, "including prices, promotions, product details, and availability". "Write clear, specific copy explaining what you offer and why it may be useful." And make sure creative and landing pages comply with OpenAI's Ads Policies.
The first step is where most of the risk sits. If a landing page still shows last month's promotion, an enhanced headline drawn from that page could repeat it. The help article does not say whether enhancements check claims against anything beyond the advertiser's own ad and page.
Reporting will not isolate the effect
OpenAI says advertisers can monitor delivery and results in Ads Manager "at the campaign, ad group, and ad levels". Available metrics are impressions, clicks, spend, CTR and attributed conversions where conversion measurement is set up. Then comes a caveat: "These metrics describe overall performance. Changes over time do not, on their own, establish the effect of creative enhancements."
That caveat matters for anyone trying to judge the feature. The help article describes no report that separates enhanced versions from the original creative, and PPC Land pointed out the same gap on 21 October. Without that split, a rise or fall in CTR after the switch-on could come from the enhancements, from seasonality, from auction competition or from the wider growth of ChatGPT Ads. A cleaner approach, offered here as a suggestion, is to keep comparable campaigns opted in and opted out over the same dates and compare them side by side.
What the help article does not say
Several points remain unanswered in OpenAI's help article as of 23 October 2026:
- Which languages ads can be translated into, and how the target language is chosen for a given user.
- How a replacement destination URL is picked, and whether advertisers can exclude pages from selection.
- Whether advertisers can see, after the fact, the enhanced text that actually ran.
- Who is responsible if an enhanced headline makes a claim the advertiser would not have approved.
- Whether campaigns bought through technology partners are covered as well as self-serve ones. The email said "self-serve campaigns", while the help article says "new and existing campaigns" without that qualifier.
OpenAI does answer one common worry directly. Asked whether creative enhancements change ChatGPT's answers, the help article says: "No. Ads do not influence ChatGPT's answers. Ads are separate and clearly labeled." OpenAI's engineering team described that separation in more detail on 21 October, in a post about how ChatGPT's ad system selects ads.
What this means for Thai marketers
This section is Relevant Audience analysis, not OpenAI guidance. ChatGPT Ads began rolling out in Thailand on 23 September 2026, as part of OpenAI's Southeast Asia and Taiwan expansion, so Thai campaigns fall under this change unless they are opted out.
Translation is the first thing to look at. With enhancements on, an English ad could be shown in Thai, or a Thai ad in another language, in wording produced by OpenAI's system instead of a copywriter. Thai has its own levels of formality, and a machine-translated headline may not match the brand's tone. OpenAI has not said which languages are supported.
Destination URL changes come second. A site with separate Thai and English paths could see a Thai-speaking user sent to an English page, or a promotion page replaced by a general category page. Campaigns that depend on one landing page for tracking, a LINE add-friend flow or a promotion code should be reviewed first.
Regulated categories need the most care. An automated rewrite that drifts from approved wording could become a compliance problem. For these advertisers, opting out at account level and then confirming each campaign is the cautious choice until there is evidence of what enhanced copy looks like in practice. Teams that want a second pair of eyes on their settings can look at Relevant Audience's ChatGPT Ads management service.
Frequently asked questions
When do ChatGPT Ads creative enhancements turn on?
They turn on at the end of October 2026, but OpenAI has given three different dates. The advertiser email said Friday 30 October, PPC Land saw Thursday 29 October on the help page on 21 October, and the help page now says "Thursday, October 31", although 31 October 2026 is a Saturday. Opting out before 29 October covers every version.
Do I have to do anything?
Only if you do not want OpenAI to rewrite, translate or redirect your ads automatically. If you do nothing, enhancements switch on for new and existing campaigns. If you opted out earlier, OpenAI says that opt-out is preserved.
Where is the opt-out setting?
The opt-out is in Ads Manager under Manage settings. Set the account default there, then check each campaign, because campaign-specific settings take priority over the account default.
Can I preview the enhanced versions before they run?
No. OpenAI says the experience does not provide a preview of every variation, and enhanced versions can run without review or approval while the setting is on.
Does this apply to ChatGPT Ads in Thailand?
Yes, as far as OpenAI's published material shows. The help article lists no country exceptions, and OpenAI began rolling out ChatGPT Ads in Thailand on 23 September 2026.
Creative enhancements hand OpenAI's system more say over what an ad says, which language it uses and where it sends people. The decision for each advertiser is narrow and has a deadline: allow it on campaigns where flexible copy is acceptable, and switch it off where wording, language or landing page must stay fixed.
