Anyone who uses Google Search regularly knows that Google has a feature called Google Doodle, which is used to display its logo on special days around the world. On December 6, many Google users noticed that the Google logo had changed into an illustration of a woman, surrounded by patterns that reflected her identity as a poet, writer, and intellectual. Yet it is hard to believe that few people actually know who the person in this logo is, why she matters, and why Google honored her by featuring her in its Google Doodle. In this article, Relevant Audience will help everyone uncover the answer together. Let's take a look.
What Is Google Doodle?
Before we find out who the woman in the December 6 logo is, let's first get to know the feature called Google Doodle. The history of Google Doodle has a rather interesting backstory. Anyone who has ever looked up the history of the Google Doodle feature on Wikipedia may have felt quite surprised, because Wikipedia states that this feature first appeared on August 30, 1998, while the Google website itself was registered on September 4, 1998, and launched for the first time on September 27. That means Google Doodle actually came into being even before the search engine Google.com existed!
Let us point out beforehand that the information above from Wikipedia is not incorrect at all. In reality, the world's first Google Doodle logo came into existence when Larry Page and Sergey Brin, the two founders of Google, were planning to attend the Burning Man festival. They modified the Google logo and uploaded it to the website on August 30 to announce that they were attending the festival. Later on, the Google Doodles Team was formed, with the role of creating various logos referencing important days, the birthdays of notable figures, festivals, special events, and so on. Today, these are sometimes not just ordinary logos, but also animations, GIF files, and even playable games.
In addition, for anyone who doesn't already know, the Google Doodle Team is always open to receiving idea submissions from the general public. So if anyone wants Google to create a Google Doodle logo, they can submit a request to Google right away (though you may have to wait a while, because Google receives a large number of requests every single day).
Who Is the Woman in the Google Doodle on December 6?
On the morning of this past December 6, anyone using Google would have seen that the Google Doodle logo had changed into an illustration of a woman surrounded by books. In fact, the woman whom Google brought up for people to remember is a woman named "Nilawan Pinthong," known well among many readers by the nickname "Grandma Editor." She was the editor of the first issue of Satri San magazine in 1949 (B.E. 2492), and later took on the role of editor for two more publications: Darun San and Sapda San (magazines regarded as a gathering place for many Siamese intellectuals of that era, including Noranit Setthabut, Charnvit Kasetsiri, and Nithisak Ratchaphit, among others).
In addition to serving as a magazine editor, Nilawan was also the founder and served as president of the Language and Books Society of Thailand. Among the awards and honors she received was being the first Thai person to win the Ramon Magsaysay Award in the Public Service category, as well as the Sriburapha Award. Throughout her life, she devoted herself entirely to the world of literature, books, magazines, and significant writings that have influenced today's Thai writers from generation to generation, before she passed away on February 7, 2017 (B.E. 2560), at the age of 101.
And so, on December 6, the Google Doodle commemorated the 107th anniversary of the birth of Nilawan Pinthong, a person who made invaluable contributions to the world of literature, books, and magazines in Thailand.
