CPL (Cost Per Lead)
CPL is the amount spent to generate one lead, calculated as total spend divided by number of leads.
It is central to lead-generation campaigns where the goal is enquiries rather than direct sales. It resembles CPA, but CPL counts leads (interested prospects) while CPA often counts completed customer actions. Tracking lead quality alongside CPL prevents optimising for cheap but worthless leads.
CPL only means something with lead quality attached, because lead sources differ wildly in intent: a form pre-filled from a social ad and an enquiry typed after a comparison search are different objects at different prices. The essential companion number is lead-to-customer rate by source, which turns CPL into cost per customer, the figure decisions should run on. Feeding quality outcomes back to the ad platforms, offline conversion imports or qualified-stage events, is what stops automated bidding from optimising toward the cheap, hopeless end of the lead pool.
Example
A solar installer's leads cost 400 baht from Facebook forms and 850 from Google Search. The sales team's close rates: 2% on Facebook (forms filled half-asleep), 11% on Search (people actively pricing panels). Cost per customer: 20,000 versus 7,700. Budget follows the second number; every earlier reallocation had followed the first and moved money the wrong way.
Frequently asked questions
- How do I reduce cost per lead without losing quality?
- Fix the conversion path first, form length, mobile bugs, page speed, then sharpen targeting and offers. Track how each source's leads close while you cut: a falling CPL with collapsing close rates is a worse outcome, not a better one.
- What is the difference between CPL and CPA?
- CPL prices an interested prospect; CPA prices a completed action, often a customer. The gap between them is your close rate, and the two divergence patterns matter: cheap leads that never close, and expensive leads that close so well they are the bargain.
