Conversion

A conversion is any completed action you define as valuable, such as a form submission, purchase, call, or signup.

Conversions are the bridge between traffic and business outcomes, and defining them correctly is what makes every other metric meaningful. For example, a campaign might count completed enquiry forms as conversions. Tracking the wrong action, or none at all, is the most common reason campaigns look fine but deliver nothing.

Counting too many things as conversions is more damaging than counting too few. Every soft action added to the primary set dilutes the signal automated bidding learns from, and the system will optimise toward whichever is easiest to produce, which is almost always the least valuable one. Keep the primary set small and tied to revenue. Track everything else as secondary, where it is visible for analysis without steering spend. When conversion volume is genuinely too low for automated bidding, a well-chosen mid-funnel action is a reasonable proxy, but it should be a deliberate choice, not something that accumulated.

Example

A clinic counts every phone click as a conversion: 200 a month, campaigns look excellent. Call tracking reveals 140 lasted under 20 seconds: wrong numbers and opening-hours questions. Redefining the conversion as calls over 60 seconds drops the count to 60 but makes it real, and smart bidding, now trained on genuine patients, lowers the true cost per patient within two cycles.

Frequently asked questions

What should I count as a conversion?
Actions that genuinely indicate commercial progress: qualified form fills, calls of meaningful length, purchases, or bookings. Counting page views, scroll depth or newsletter signups as primary conversions teaches automated bidding to chase the wrong outcome.
Why do my ad platform and analytics conversion numbers differ?
They use different attribution models and windows. Google Ads credits the ad click within its lookback window; GA4 uses its own attribution and session logic. The numbers will never match exactly. Pick one as your source of truth for decisions and stay consistent.
