Conversion Rate

Conversion rate is the percentage of visitors or clicks that complete a desired action, calculated as conversions divided by visits times 100.

It measures how effectively a page or campaign turns interest into action. For example, 50 leads from 1,000 visitors is a 5% conversion rate. Improving it through better pages and offers often beats simply buying more traffic.

Conversion rate is a property of the audience and offer as much as the page, which is why comparing rates across campaigns with different intent is meaningless: brand traffic converts at multiples of prospecting traffic on the identical page. Improvements come from three places, in rising order of difficulty: removing friction (forms, speed, mobile bugs), strengthening the offer (clarity, proof, price framing), and changing who arrives (targeting). The compounding effect is what makes it strategic: a doubled conversion rate halves every acquisition cost upstream, permanently, for free.

Example

Same traffic, same offer, two landing pages. Version A: 14-field form, stock photo, 1.9% conversion. Version B: 4 fields, price on page, review strip, 4.7%. From 3,000 monthly visitors that is 57 leads against 141, with media spend unchanged. Every campaign metric upstream, CPC, CTR, budget, was identical; the multiplication at the last step decided the outcome.

Frequently asked questions

What is a good conversion rate?
Wildly context-dependent: brand traffic to a strong page can run 10 percent while cold display runs under 1. Compare each page against its own history and its own traffic mix. The benchmarks worth chasing are your own trend lines.
How do I improve conversion rate without more traffic?
Remove friction, shorter forms, faster pages, working mobile, then strengthen the offer: visible pricing, proof, a single clear action. Session recordings and form analytics show exactly where visitors give up, which turns guessing into a fix list.
