Landing Page

A landing page is a focused page designed to convert visitors toward a single goal, often where users arrive from an ad or campaign.

Stripping away distractions and aligning the message with the ad that sent the visitor improves conversion. For example, a Google Ads campaign for SEO services should lead to a dedicated SEO landing page, not the homepage. Strong landing pages also raise ad Quality Score and lower costs.

Form length is the lever with the most predictable effect. Each additional field reduces completion, and fields that feel intrusive reduce it more than their number suggests, with company size and budget questions being common offenders. The usual argument for keeping them is lead qualification, which is worth weighing honestly against the leads never submitted. An alternative that often works better is asking for the minimum up front and qualifying afterward, either in a follow-up or through progressive profiling. Mobile deserves separate checking, since a form that is merely long on desktop can be genuinely difficult on a phone.

Example

An ad promising "Free Google Ads audit" once pointed at the agency homepage: services menu, blog, careers, 1.2% conversion. The replacement page has one headline repeating the offer, three bullets, one form, no navigation: 5.8%. Same ads, same spend, 4.8x the leads. Quality Score rose as well, because the ad's promise and the page's content finally matched, so each click also cost less.

Frequently asked questions

What makes a landing page convert?
Message match with the ad or link that brought the visitor, one clear action instead of competing options, proof such as reviews or client logos, and a form that asks only for what you genuinely need. Every extra field measurably reduces completion.
Should I send ad traffic to my homepage?
Rarely. The homepage serves everyone and therefore converts no one particularly well. A dedicated landing page that continues the specific promise made in the ad almost always outperforms it, and it also improves Quality Score.
