Content Gap
A content gap is a topic or query your audience searches for that your site does not yet cover well, often one competitors do.
Finding gaps reveals clear opportunities to win traffic by creating the missing content. For example, if competitors rank for "GEO for Thai brands" and you have nothing on it, that is a gap worth filling. Gap analysis usually compares your coverage against competitors and search demand.
The productive gap analysis is filtered hard: strip branded queries, strip irrelevant rankings competitors picked up by accident, strip anything your business cannot credibly serve, and what remains is a genuine to-do list. The overlooked half of the exercise is internal gaps, queries where you rank 5th to 15th with a page that only glances at the topic. Those close faster than true gaps because the ranking foothold already exists. Refreshing an under-serving page routinely beats writing a new one into a space competitors already own.
Example
A gap analysis crosses two competitor domains against yours: they rank for 214 queries you do not touch. Filtering to commercial intent leaves 31, including "shopify seo thailand" with an estimated 40 monthly searches and no strong Thai-language answer anywhere. That one gap becomes a page that ranks 2nd in six weeks, because a gap both competitors half-covered is easier than any head term.
Frequently asked questions
- How do I run a content gap analysis?
- Cross competitor rankings against your own in a tool that supports the comparison, filter out branded and irrelevant queries, and keep terms your business can credibly serve. Add the internal kind as well: queries you already rank 5 to 15 for with a page that only grazes the topic.
- How do I prioritise which gaps to fill first?
- By business value, then by winnability. A 50-search query that produces clients outranks a 5,000-search query that produces readers, and gaps where the current answers are weak close fastest. Volume is the tiebreaker, never the lead criterion.
