AEO (Answer Engine Optimization)
Answer Engine Optimization is the practice of optimising content to be the direct answer surfaced by answer engines such as AI Overviews, featured snippets, and voice assistants.
Where classic SEO competes for a ranking position, AEO competes to be the single response a user reads or hears. Clear question-and-answer formatting, concise definitions, and structured data are the core levers. It overlaps heavily with GEO and is often used interchangeably.
Formatting decisions have outsized effect here because extraction is mechanical. A heading phrased as the question a person would ask, followed immediately by a direct answer, gives a retrieval system a clean unit to lift. Burying the answer under context does the opposite. The other habit that helps is writing self-contained sentences: a claim that depends on the previous three paragraphs to make sense will not survive being extracted. Read a paragraph on its own and ask whether it still means anything, since that is exactly the condition it will be quoted under.
Example
"How long does an SEO audit take?" One agency's page answers in its first sentence under that exact heading: "A full technical audit of a mid-size site takes 5 to 10 working days." Perplexity quotes it verbatim with a citation. A competitor's page holds the same fact inside paragraph six of "Our Process", and no answer engine has ever surfaced it.
Frequently asked questions
- Is AEO the same as GEO?
- They are used almost interchangeably. AEO is usually framed around being the direct answer, including featured snippets and voice results; GEO is usually framed around generative AI answers specifically. In practice the work is the same: answer the question clearly, and be a source worth quoting.
- What makes content easy for answer engines to use?
- A direct answer in the first sentence or two under a matching heading, factual statements that stand alone without surrounding context, tables and lists for structured comparisons, and clear dates and sources. Content that buries the answer three paragraphs into a story rarely gets extracted.
