GEO & AI Search
GEO (Generative Engine Optimization)
Generative Engine Optimization is the practice of optimising content so it gets surfaced, quoted, and cited by generative AI systems like ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity, and Google's AI Overviews.
It extends SEO into a world where the answer is synthesised rather than ranked, prioritising clear claims, quotable statistics, structured formatting, and strong entity signals. For example, a well-structured definition with a clean factual statement is more likely to be pulled into an AI answer than a vague paragraph. As AI assistants absorb more of the discovery journey, GEO decides whether a brand appears in the answer at all.
Measurement is the hard part, since no equivalent of rank tracking exists yet. What works today is a fixed panel of questions real buyers ask, run across the major assistants on a regular schedule, recording whether you appear and in what terms. Repeating the same set monthly turns anecdote into a trend line. Pair that with referral data, since ChatGPT, Perplexity, and Gemini pass identifiable referrers, and with AI crawler activity in server logs. None of the three is complete on its own, but together they show whether the work is landing.
Example
Asked "best digital marketing agency in Bangkok for B2B", ChatGPT names three agencies and cites two sources. None of the three ranks first organically for the matching Google query; all three share something else: clear service descriptions in crawlable HTML, consistent details across their site, LinkedIn and directories, and third-party mentions describing them the same way. That set of signals, not their rankings, decided who got named.
Frequently asked questions
- Is GEO different from SEO?
- It overlaps heavily but optimises for a different outcome. SEO aims for a ranked link; GEO aims to be quoted inside a generated answer. The shared foundation is crawlable, well-structured, genuinely authoritative content. What GEO adds is answer-shaped writing and the brand mentions AI systems draw on.
- How do I measure GEO performance?
- Track how often your brand appears in AI answers for the prompts your buyers use, monitor referral traffic from ChatGPT, Perplexity and Gemini in analytics, and watch AI crawler hits in server logs. There is no equivalent of rank tracking yet, so prompt-based monitoring is the practical method.
