Grounding & Citations
Grounding is the process by which an AI system anchors its answer to real, retrievable sources rather than producing unsupported text, and citations are the links it shows to those sources.
For brands, being one of the grounded, cited sources is the AI-search equivalent of ranking on page one. Content that is factual, well-structured, and easy to extract is far more likely to be pulled in. Clear claims and clean formatting make a page citation-friendly.
Citation behaviour differs enough between systems that a single strategy underperforms. Some cite heavily and link out, others synthesise with minimal attribution, and the mix changes as products iterate. What holds across them is that specific, checkable statements get grounded more readily than general claims, because a system can verify the first and not the second. Dates help for the same reason. A page that states when something was measured, and by whom, gives a grounding system something to anchor to, while an undated assertion is harder to rely on and easier to skip.
Example
An assistant is asked whether Google Ads costs more than Facebook Ads in Thailand. One agency page states: "Across our 2025 client accounts, average Google Search CPC was 18 baht against 9 baht for Facebook traffic campaigns." Dated, attributed, checkable: the answer cites it. A competitor's "costs vary widely depending on many factors" is true and useless, and grounding systems have nothing to hold.
Frequently asked questions
- Why do AI systems cite some sources and not others?
- Grounded systems favour sources that are retrievable, clearly relevant to the query, and specific enough to support the claim being made. Pages that state facts plainly, with dates and attribution, are easier to ground against than pages of marketing prose.
- What is a ghost citation?
- A citation to a source that does not actually support the claim, or in some cases does not exist. It is a known failure mode of generative systems. For brands it matters because being cited is not the same as being cited accurately, which is why AI answer monitoring is worth doing.
