Zero-Click Search
A zero-click search is one answered directly on the results page, through an AI Overview, featured snippet, or knowledge panel, so the user never clicks through to a site.
A large and growing share of searches now end this way. The strategic response is to optimise for visibility and brand presence within the answer itself, and to focus conversion-driving content on queries that still require a click. It makes appearing in the answer, not just ranking, the goal.
Impressions rising while clicks stay flat is the pattern to watch, and Search Console shows it clearly at the query level. It usually means answers are being satisfied on the results page. Reacting by chasing more informational keywords makes it worse. The better response is to check whether the queries losing clicks were ever commercially useful, since many were not. Where they were, look at whether the page can offer something the summary cannot: a calculator, a comparison specific to your market, current pricing, or anything that needs the visit and cannot be summarised away.
Example
"bangkok vat rate" returns the number in a featured box: nearly nobody clicks anything. An accounting firm ranked first, watched impressions climb and clicks fall, then narrowed its target to "vat registration process for foreign companies", where the answer cannot fit in a box. Traffic on the money pages recovered, and the zero-click definition query still shows the firm's name above every competitor.
Frequently asked questions
- Are zero-click searches bad for business?
- Not necessarily. You lose the click but often gain the visibility and the brand impression, and the queries most affected are usually informational, not commercial. The risk is real only if your traffic model depends on informational content earning ad revenue.
- How do I respond to rising zero-click searches?
- Shift measurement away from raw sessions toward business outcomes, prioritise commercial pages where clicks still happen, and treat informational content as brand and citation building instead of as traffic. Being the source quoted in the answer still shapes who gets shortlisted.
