CPM (Cost Per Mille)

CPM is the cost an advertiser pays per one thousand ad impressions, common in awareness and display campaigns.

It suits goals built around visibility rather than direct clicks or conversions. For example, a brand campaign might optimise for low CPM to maximise reach. It measures exposure cost, not response, so pair it with engagement metrics.

CPM buys exposure, so its evaluation belongs with exposure goals: cost to reach the intended audience, not cost per click that the format was never optimising for. Comparing CPMs is only meaningful with targeting held constant, a low CPM on a broad audience is usually just cheaper people, not better buying. The metric pairs with frequency and reach to answer the real question: what did it cost to put the message in front of how many of the right people, how many times. Awareness campaigns judged on clicks get cancelled precisely when they are working.

Example

A condo developer runs awareness at 45-baht CPM: one million impressions for 45,000 baht, reaching 320,000 people around three transit lines. Nobody expects clicks; the measure is whether project-name searches rise, and they triple over the campaign month. The same million impressions bought through clicks would have cost several times more, because click pricing pays for a response awareness does not need.

Frequently asked questions

When should I optimise for CPM instead of clicks?
When the goal is being seen by the right people: launches, brand campaigns, retargeting pools you want warmed. Judge by cost to reach the target audience and lift in branded search or recall, not by clicks the format was never buying.
Why is my CPM rising?
Auction pressure: more advertisers for the same audience, seasonal peaks like Q4 and double-digit sale days, or frequency fatigue forcing the platform to pay more for remaining impressions. Refreshing creative and widening audiences relieve the pressure you control.
