Conversions API (CAPI)

The Conversions API is a server-side method of sending conversion data directly from your server to Meta, rather than relying only on the browser-based pixel.

It improves measurement accuracy as browsers restrict cookies and tracking. For example, it can capture conversions the pixel misses due to ad blockers or browser limits. Used together, the pixel and CAPI give a fuller, more reliable picture.

CAPI's value is exactly the gap between what browsers report and what actually happened, typically 15 to 30% of conversions in this market once iOS and ad blockers take their share. Server events carry customer parameters the browser can no longer send, which raises match quality and feeds optimisation better signal. The implementation detail that decides success is deduplication: pixel and server both send the same event with a shared ID, and the platform keeps one. Done wrong, reported results double; done right, campaigns see the fuller picture and bid accordingly.

Example

Browser-only tracking reports 61 purchases; the server sends the same events through CAPI and the deduplicated total reads 84: 23 orders the pixel lost to ad blockers and iOS. The ad system had been optimising on 73% of reality. After CAPI, Event Match Quality reaches 8.1, reported cost per purchase falls 27% overnight, and nothing about the ads changed: only the measurement did.

Frequently asked questions

Is the Conversions API worth the setup effort?
If you spend meaningfully on Meta, yes: recovering 15 to 30 percent of invisible conversions changes both reporting and what the bidding system learns from. Via GTM server-side or a partner integration, setup is days, not months, and it pays permanently.
How does CAPI deduplication work?
Pixel and server submit one event under a shared event ID; the platform keeps a single copy. Correct IDs make the pair additive, missing ones double-count, which inflates results and misleads optimisation. Test deduplication explicitly in Events Manager before trusting the numbers.
