Content Optimization

Content optimisation is the process of refining a page's text, structure, and relevance so it better matches search intent and ranks well.

It covers using the right terms, answering the query fully, structuring with clear headings, and keeping content current. The aim is to be the most useful result for the query, not just to insert keywords. Well-optimised content also performs better in AI-generated answers.

The highest-return optimisation is usually alignment, not addition: matching the page's format, vocabulary and coverage to what currently ranks, because the current results are Google's statement of what satisfies the query. Check what every top result covers that you do not, which phrasings they use where yours differ, and what format they share. Then update honestly, cut what is obsolete, and leave the URL alone. Optimisation decays: queries drift, competitors update, results reshuffle, so money pages deserve a scheduled review rather than a one-time polish.

Example

A visa-services page ranks 9th. The team checks what ranks above it: every competitor covers processing times and costs, which the page never mentions, and the page's phrasing says "visa assistance" while every search says "visa agent". They add both sections, restructure headings as questions, and update the 2019 fee table. The page reaches 3rd in two months, same URL, same links.

Frequently asked questions

How do I know which pages to optimise first?
Pages ranking 5 to 15 for queries with real demand: the foothold exists and the gap is closable. Search Console's query report filtered to those positions is the shortlist, prioritised by the business value of each query rather than raw impressions.
How often should content be re-optimised?
Commercial pages warrant a review every quarter or two; evergreen supporting content, roughly annually. The trigger is drift: rankings sliding, competitors refreshing, the SERP changing format. Re-optimisation means genuine improvement, an updated date on unchanged text moves nothing.
