Backlink
A backlink is a link from another website to yours, treated by search engines as a signal of trust and relevance.
One editorial link from a respected industry site usually carries more weight than dozens from low-quality directories. For example, a national news site linking to your guide passes strong authority. Quality and topical relevance matter far more than raw count.
Referring domains matter more than link count, because ten links from one site are worth far less than one link each from ten. A single site can only vouch for you once in any meaningful sense. When evaluating a prospect, the questions that matter are whether the site has its own organic traffic, whether it covers your subject area, and whether the page linking to you would exist without the link. Sites that publish anything for a fee usually fail all three. A link from a page nobody reads on a site nobody trusts does not move anything.

A furniture maker earns two links in one month. A national design magazine links to its workshop story: referring domain with real readership, topical match, editorial choice. A free directory in another language lists it alongside 4,000 businesses: none of those things. The first link moves rankings within weeks.
