Paid Social
Audience
An audience is the defined group of people a campaign targets, built from attributes like demographics, interests, behaviours, or past interactions.
Precise audience definition determines whether budget reaches people likely to act. For example, targeting "hotel decision-makers in Thailand" focuses spend on relevant users. The quality of audience targeting often matters more than the size of the budget.
Audience definition is where most paid-social performance is actually decided, before creative or bidding get their turn. The durable structure separates temperature: cold prospecting, warm engagement, hot intent, with different messages, budgets and expectations per layer, and exclusions keeping them from overlapping, paying prospecting prices to reach people already in the funnel is the standard silent waste. Platform detargeting has narrowed the options: detailed interest categories keep shrinking, which shifts the weight onto first-party seeds, broad targeting steered by strong creative, and the quality of your customer data.
Example
A gym advertises to "interests: fitness" in Bangkok: 4 million people, mostly browsing, cost per membership 3,800 baht. Rebuilt audience: people within 3km of the branch who visited the pricing page or follow competing gyms: 60,000 people, cost per membership 900 baht. Same product, same creative, same budget; the entire performance difference was who was allowed to see it.
Frequently asked questions
- How specific should my ad targeting be?
- Specific enough that the message can be written for one person: a defined need, context and objection. When platform categories are too coarse, first-party seeds and lookalikes carry the precision, and broad targeting works only when strong creative does the selecting.
- Why is my well-targeted campaign not converting?
- Audience-message-offer mismatch is the usual chain to check: the right people seeing a generic message, or the right message pointing at a page built for someone else. Exclusions matter too, without them you may be paying prospecting prices for people already converting elsewhere.
