Custom Audience
A custom audience is a targeting group built from your own data, such as website visitors, customer lists, or people who engaged with your content.
It powers remarketing and lets you reach people who already know your brand. For example, uploading a customer email list creates a custom audience you can re-engage or exclude. It is also the basis for building lookalike audiences.
Custom audiences are first-party data doing advertising work, which makes them the asset that appreciates as tracking degrades: uploaded lists match on hashed identifiers, not cookies. The underused half is exclusion and sequencing rather than plain retargeting: suppress current customers from acquisition spend, suppress recent buyers from repurchase offers until the cycle warrants it, move audiences between message stages as they act. Match rates set the ceiling, clean lists with emails and phone numbers match far better, and consent is a legal requirement (PDPA here), not a checkbox.
Example
A dealership uploads 8,000 service customers as a hashed list, matches 5,200 to accounts, and runs a trade-in offer only to them: 3x the response of prospecting. The same list, inverted, becomes the exclusion that stops "first-visit discount" ads reaching existing customers, quietly the more valuable of the two uses: nobody is paid to be annoyed by an offer they cannot use.
Frequently asked questions
- What data can I build custom audiences from?
- Uploaded customer lists (hashed emails and phones), site visitors via pixel and CAPI, app events, and platform engagement: video viewers, form openers, page interactors. Recency windows control freshness, and PDPA-compliant consent is the ticket to any of it.
- Why is my custom audience smaller than my customer list?
- Match rates: the platform finds accounts for only a share of uploaded identifiers, typically 40 to 70 percent. Improve it by uploading multiple identifiers per person, emails plus phone numbers in clean formats, and expect unmatched records to simply drop out.
