Ad Rank

Ad Rank is the value Google uses to decide whether your ad shows and in what position, calculated mainly from your bid, Quality Score, and context.

A strong Quality Score can win a higher position than a competitor with a bigger bid but weaker relevance. This is why ad quality, not just budget, determines placement. Improving relevance and landing pages can raise position without raising bids.

The leverage in Ad Rank is asymmetric: bids can be copied by any competitor tomorrow, quality cannot. Since the effective price is set relative to the advertiser below you, quality improvements compound, higher position and lower cost per click simultaneously, which is why the durable Google Ads advantage is almost always relevance work: tight ad groups, ads that mirror the query, landing pages that deliver on the ad. Thresholds add the detail most miss: with too little quality, no bid shows the ad at all, and no budget increase fixes it.

Example

Simplified auction: advertiser A bids 40 baht with poor ads, quality 4: Ad Rank 160. B bids 25 with strong ads, quality 8: Ad Rank 200. B shows above A while bidding 15 baht less, and B's actual CPC is roughly A's rank divided by B's quality plus one satang: about 21 baht. Google's real formula adds thresholds, context and asset impact, but the order of factors is exactly this.

Frequently asked questions

How do I improve my Ad Rank?
Improve the quality inputs: expected CTR through tighter ads and offers, relevance by mirroring the query per ad group, landing page experience by delivering exactly what the ad promised, and add assets, since expected asset impact is one of Google's stated factors. Bid raises are the option of last resort because competitors match them by lunchtime.
Why do my ads not show even though I am bidding high?
Ad Rank thresholds: below minimum quality the auction excludes you at any bid. Check the keyword's Quality Score components; below-average landing page experience or expected CTR is usually the block. Fix those before spending another satang on bids.
